Hi,
I recently got my hands on a nice used R5 body. It is my first mirrorless camera. I have been using these two primes with 5D3, 1D4 and 7D2 since years. I never thought that autofocus without a mirror could be faster than a good DSLR. The results and reports from FM members convinced me to join the parade. I am amazed by the keeper rate and IQ!
Now I notice that the focus preset is completely disabled when I use the R5 with the Canon adapter. I have the one without the control ring. Focus preset still work flawlessly with all my DSLR’s.
I never heard about this incompatibility issue before. I searched the manual and menus, custom functions, buttons and rings customisation, etc. Am I the only one experiencing this issue? Could the adapter with control ring solve this issue? Google did not provide any help either 🤷🏻‍♂️.

I'm also early in my mirrorless transition process and just got an R6 loaner from CPS to try. I will use it with my 200-400 and can check if the focus preset works with this combo. But it's all packed away ahead of some travel in a few hours. I'll try to let you know in a day or so.

I used the 200-400 with the R3 for the past couple weeks but didn't think to check that feature. Probably because I rarely use it...

I have not noticed it either because I don't use that feature. It may be an error that can be corrected by a camera firmware update.

Hello,
Same problem with 200 1.8, 300 2.8 IS and 400 2.8 IS. No problem with 500 F4 IS Mk2.

Yes, that is one of the things I tried. There are no firmware to download from Canon support section on Canon website for these lenses unfortunately.

Thank you JORDI350D, so I will stop to worry about some kind of malfunction from my R5 body. These older versions do not seem communicate with the AF stop button and focus preset ring system.
I did not see any info from Canon on this. I am sure that we are not the only dinosaurs using these classic big primes. AF and IS are working as good if not better on R5 than all my previous DSLR’s.

I had read about this in a 2021 reddit post when I was researching the R6. I also found it in the Canon R5 manual on page 286 that I found online at https://cam.start.canon/en/C003/manual/c003.pdf

It says: "With EF lenses, focus preset during shooting is only available when using (super)
telephoto lenses equipped with this function released in and after the second half of
2011."

Both the EF 300mm 2.8 L IS and 500mm were introduced in 1999.

Looks like justashooter answered the question, but to follow up on my earlier post, I tried the 200-400 on the R6 and it works with the focus preset feature.

How many frames per second are you getting - using the mechanical shutter - with the 200-400? And if anyone has a EF 300mm 2.8 L IS II, I would like to know with that also.

I've only used the R3 and R6 so far. For action, IMO the mechanical shutter modes of the R6 are unusable due to EVF stutter causing me to have difficulty following subjects while panning. And with the R3 what's the point of using mechanical shutter modes?

I just put the R6 on the 200-400 and did some sequences with static focus. EFCS sounds like ~12fps as per the camera's H+ fps specs state. Mechanical shutter is slightly slower, probably around 10fps. I may have an R5 for comparison from CPS later this week and can check it as well. I'd guess the 300 IS v2 will be comparable to the 200-400 given the similar vintage.

The 200-400 is among the set of EF lenses listed as being compatible with the highest framerates on the R5 (and presumably, R6 and R3):

Thanks for the info. Could not get more that about 7 fps with my 300mm Mark II and R6. Don't know what's going on.
