p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Praying Mantis

I do not believe that I have ever seen a Praying Mantis outside of an elementary school classroom or Nature Center. That changed two days ago when I encountered one in our backyard. I have just begun experimenting with using extension tubes, and thought this a good subject to try again on. I have a lot to learn, but these are a few of my better efforts. As always, Comments and Constructive Criticism are welcomed.

Hey Scott these are excellent images. Your critical focus is spot on The more time outside the more your eyes are trained to see things you have missed that were always there
Hoping you have numerous more enjoyable encounters outdoors like this one! Great presentation as well.

All very good but the third has the harmonious background.

Recently, there was news of mantises becoming established in the UK.

Thanks Karl and Brian! This ended up being an "easy" find, in that he was under the tarp on our woodpile. I saw him when I went to through the tarp back on the pile. My daughter got a stick, and moved him/her to a bush, so that we didn't accidentally squish him. He started to crawl down into the bush, and its amazing that as easy it was to see him from the top, when I squatted down to look through the bush, I couldn't find him!

I am hoping I start to see things like this more often!

Thanks Harold! But, what do you mean by "harmonious background"?

You nailed the focus on the first one. Its eye is perfect. Praying Mantis'are good subjects because they tend to hold quite still; relative to other bugs one would find in their yard.

Thanks Al. It definitely held still for the most part. Which is good, because I was standing off-balance, and hand-holding the camera. With the 12mm extension tube, focusing wasn't too bad. Using the 25mm tube, as I rocked back and forth, I watched the focus keep changing in the viewfinder. Attempting to be rock-solid still, seemed more strenuous than hand-holding and panning/tracking with a 500 or 600mm lens.
