As I was walking out of the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside NY. In the distance, I spotted this young night heron in shoulder deep in the grass. I'd just settled on an exposure when it blasted off with the late afternoon light going through it's wings and the dark trees in the background.

Real beauty here Morris! I was trying to get shots of Terns last week when I saw a shadow in my viewfinder and looked up to see a mature night heron flying about 30 feet from me. Missed it completely, so I'm glad to see you were on the ball with this one!

It takes a lot of practice to grab the surprise shots. I had the advantage of already being on the subject.
