I was looking over the white paper on the 1DxIII and stumbled into this feature that the camera had in Live View. The camera is silent when ripping off these shots. The AF Servo in the III is active and works as opposed to the II where it only focused on the very first shot. I didn’t know this about the camera but having tried it, it sure does rip off a lot of shots in a row.

Has anyone used this feature and if so, your comments both positive and negative are appreciated.

Live view isn't a viable shooting option for anything moving, but this isn't new news. I think Polin did a video about it using a hoodman strapped to the back of the 1Dx3, he called it the best focusing/tracking mirrorless DSLR.

Haven't used it just saw the aforementioned Fro video. He said it was comparable to the A9 series in LV IIRC. I'd guess some sort of electronic shutter if it's silent, certainly the mirror is up. Even my SL2 had DPAF advantages in LV

I have the 1DxIII as well as the R3…..as he noted in his video, the biggest drawback in the 1DxIII was that you had to look at the live view screen as opposed to looking through a view finder.

This was a primary reason I didn't buy the 1DXIII after having owned all previous 1D (non-s) versions. Had Canon incorporated a hybrid OVF/EVF system that allowed using both traditional DSLR (OVF) and off the imaging sensor focusing (EVF) through the viewfinder, I would have been much more interested. The 1DXIII's live view performance with AF was to me a clear indicator that much more capable mirrorless cameras (than the R and RP) were in the near future. Not soon after, the R5 and R6 landed.

I used my 1dx Mark III liked that almost the entire time I had it, worked great and loved the silent shutter. That said the R3 is better in so many ways. Amy still has her 1dx mark III but I never use it myself.

Like Ron, I never upgraded from my 1DX Mark IIs to the Mark III, but from reviews I have read, AF in Live View mode seems to be very good, for both still and moving subjects. It's pretty clear that Canon used the 1DX Mark III as a test bed for the AF system that would ultimately ship in the R5 and R6.

The main issue is one of usability. A setup like Rob's may be needed for this to be a practical shooting mode in some situations, which makes the rig more cumbersome.

Also like Ron, I too was hoping Canon would offer some kind of hybrid VF for this model, but this didn't happen. Not sure how it could have been engineered, but it would have been cool.

I have both and my point is that the ergonomics required to use the Mark III in that manner are terrible and not practical for most. Like the saying goes, just because it can doesn't mean it should ;-) Unless you don't mind looking like a goober, then it does it quite well!

I have to laugh….I didn’t know until a couple of days ago that this ‘feature’ was in the 1DxIII, go figure. But the little I have tried it the last few days I really liked it. But as Rob said the R3 is just nicer in so many ways.

One feature of the R3/R5 (my wife uses the r5 w/grip) that we like is the ability to assign one of the buttons the function of centering the AF in the VF. So many times when we are out and about, when I lift the camera to use it the AF point is buried in one of the corners. I really wish there was a way to do that with the 1DxIII.

I agree that the R3 is much nicer, but the 1DxIII is built like a tank…..

There is a quick way just push strait down on the joystick button, the AF will go to the center.

Yep, this is true on all Canon cameras that have the joystick.

I have personally used the 1Dx3 in pseudo-mirrorless shooting. I was quite happy with the results. I didn't have a loupe/bracket setup so it wasn't ergonomic/comfortable to shoot that way. But tracking was reliable and had great results.
