I have made the switch to mirrorless and typically have a lot more use with longer glass with what I do, so I have picked up the rf 70-200 but was wanting to wait a little while for the 24-70 or 28-70. Just got me thinking about the 24-105.

I have never used that lens, but I shoot college football and some event work and always had 2.8 or better glass. I am just wondering about the sharpness and usability of the the 24-105 f4? Seems like would be a versatile lens, but if its a bit soft I dont want to waste the time.

Just going on the idea that the new RF glass is very good. Thanks for any input.

You can find many reviews and opinions of this lens online.

The consensus I have absorbed from them is that it's fine, maybe as good as or slightly better than the EF Mark II, but probably not as good as the faster, shorter RF standard zooms.

About what you would expect, I guess.

It is a nice sharp lens. The big thing for sports is the F4 aperture. How much shooting at night do you do? Honestly, with the high ISO performance on the new cameras and good de-noise software you can push an R6 to ISO 51200 easily. 12800 without NR really being required. So that opens a lot of doors. But if you're on a poorly lit field at night you may miss the faster aperture.

It's better than any of the other Canon 24-105s, but not a lens I use at f/4.
The 28-70/2 is the lens to get if you can handle it. Otherwise the 24-70/2.8 is a good one for most users.

As it's been said before, it's better than the EF version, but it's not as good as the RF24-70/2.8, which in itself isn't as good as the RF28-70/2.0. But sharpness is not everything - sometimes, portability or range matters, which is why I also have the 24-240

I've owned all 3 standard RF zooms, the 24-105 f/4L IS, the 24-70 f/2.8L IS, and the 28-70 f/2L. They're all very good lenses, but they definitely are each a step up in quality over the previous (in the order listed above). The difference between them isn't sharpness; they are are impressively sharp. The main differences are obviously in light-gathering and bokah, but also in contrast and colors. I've settled on the 28-70 f/2L. It's incredibly heavy and expensive, but it also makes absolutely incredible images.

I think that as 24-105 lenses go, it's top notch. It will have a bit more wide-end distortion than the RF 24-70, as expected with the increased zoom range. But it's sharp and fast-focusing, and has a great zoom range. On my R5, it's a great lens, and it spends the most time on that body.

You do get what you pay for, but you also pay a price for the extended zoom range, particularly when you go from very wide to moderate telephoto. Two types of lenses - I think these 24-xx and 28-xx lenses are all really great compared to the old days. I had the old 28-105 f/3.5-4.5, and I had a 28-135 - they don't compare. Granted, they were not "L" glass, but they still can't compare.

Modern technology - the RF 24-105 f/4L might well be strong competition for the original EF 24-70 f/2.8 in many respects.

I actually think it's pretty good competition for the EF mk2, too. But the RF 2.8 is better yet

I hated my EF 24-105 on a FF. After getting a FF I sold it and got the EF 24-70 II which I sold after going ML. These two taken with my R. It still has CA in the corners trees but not as bad as the EF.

I've used this as one source for decision making for years. Charts on page 2. I'm very happy with it.

Typical CA under the worst conditions. I just applied CA correction. I did not defringe for this example which does get rid of the purple. If I was a high end landscape photog I would not use it but it's great for my purposes. Not sure if this helps but wanted to know the difference between the two.

Lateral chromatic aberration. This is the result of the lens focal length differing depending on the wavelength of incoming light. It is seen mainly in the corners and can be readily corrected, either by the camera (in JPEG mode) or by the RAW conversion software. Better lenses show less lateral CA but in the world of digital it's not the problem it once was.

Purple fringing. This is the result of axial colour in the infra-red spectrum being picked up as the blue and to some extent red dyes used in the sensor CFA both pass IR resulting in a purple glow around highlights.

My RF 24-105 f/4 is better than any of the EF versions I had (3), however it's not quite as good as the RF 24-70 f/2.8, but that extra 35mm of reach comes in handy.

That’s about right. My EF 24-70 II blew me away compared to the EF 24-105 F4. If I was doing critical work I would have the RF 24-70 .

Very true. We learned long ago if you cheap out often you aren’t happy, you wind up getting what you wanted in the first place and it costs you twice as much.

When I shot events my EF 24-70 II and EF 70-200 2.8 Ii were invaluable. These days some CA and few other things are the least of my concerns. Also the 24-105 is an excellent range for a travel/walk around lens. I said I’d never sell my R and that lens would live on it forever. I sold the R. Thought I might get the R7 but I’m still in the fence. Happy with my R5.

Optical limits tested the 3 lenses you're considering. I have found them to be accurate on the 4-5 lenses I've used that they tested, although they might have better luck with the 18-55's than I do. I don't particularly doubt that the 28-70/2 is the best however the Rf 24-105 L is supposed to be very good and much lighter
