Visitors to the UK can no longer reclaim VAT when they leave the country. There’s been talk of that changing, but check before you buy.

Pennsylvania got me - just got a use tax bill in the mail for a SL2S I purchased last fall, assume DHL reported it.

Yah, if the seller ships via DHL, don’t bother. DHL adds an extra shipping fee for themselves AFTER it is shipped so holding you hostage even though you already paid shipping, and reports to customs.

My Wife was able to pick me up some good deals in Italy for new M11 accessories a few weeks ago.

An extra battery in the U.S. is $200. At the Leica Store in Florence they are 139 plus VAT refund making them around $123.

She also saved me $117 on the VisoFlex 2 EVF.

My Wife never reports me to any custom or tax authorities...

Question for you guys. While the dollar is not as high as it was when this was posted, I'm interested in getting a vintage lens from a Leica dealer in Germany. Payment is by bank wire and they declare the full amount of the purchase for customs. Anyone know what the tax and duty fee implications are for importing a used Leica lens from Germany?

From reading this thread it looks like for a lens, import duty could range from nothing, to 6% or so depending on what classification they use. From the chart Huss linked, it looks like it would be 9002.11.9000 which is 2.3%.

Then I may also have to pay local sales taxes if my state finds out? And possibly a brokerage fee to the shipping company like UPS?

I'm going to Italy soon and may buy some Leica gear given the price differences. I've never purchased anything of substantial value internationally and brought it back to the US. Is there anything I need to do to ensure I don't hit any surprises with US customs?

Throw the boxes away and just put the new gear in your camera bag, as if you always had it.

My Wife says I am tight with myself and I should spend more money. I think she is just trying to even the spending pool a bit.

The problem is I can't think of anything I want that I don't already have. Camera wise I am more than content with an A1 and M11. Nothing I can't shoot with those in the bag. I am thinking of selling some lenses that just don't get enough use.
