If you can find a store in the UK that has one, the 35 M APO is about $6100. Here in the US? $8300.

The GBP is now at the lowest point vs the USD in history!  This is the time to buy from the UK if you are paying in USD.

The advantage of mail order direct is you skip all that pesky customs stuff, and you do not need to submit VAT paperwork.

Is there U.S. import duties on cameras purchased in the EU?

I didn't get hit by any when I bought a $4000 Rolleiflex from Leica Store Lisse about 4 years ago.

Right now it is about $6250 for a new M11, vs $9000 in the US.

I think you mean £6250, which is still a significant difference since it comes out to 6659 USD.

I got a quote from RedDotCamera - its 100 GBP for shipping and you need to pay via bank wire.

Try the Leica Shop in Vienna, though I'm not sure what their procedure is now with shipping to new customers. Sounds like they still will but you have to email them for the details. Orders over 500 Euro are/were free shipping. If that doesn't work, try any of the EU Leica stores. Last time I was at the Munich store they had a bunch of boxes waiting for UPS going to various countries around the world.

With the price difference, you could get a "free" plane ticket to Europe to pick up a Leica
Just a quick note if you're there, since Brexit, the UK does *not* refund VAT. EU countries do.

If they ship it, we have to pay import tax after we receive the item right?

Chances are less than 1% about anyone expressing a tax interest in this.

I purchased a Leica CL from the Netherlands earlier this year and had to pay a $105 bill to DHL after DHL delivered the package. I think it might have to do with the shipping method, declared item value, and/or possibly tariffs for German made camera goods. Still, even paying the import duties, it was cheaper buying the Leica CL from abroad. Of course, YMMV.

Actually I think you have it backwards. Today the U.S. Dollar is worth more than the Euro. Today 6250 Euro is only 6004 U.S. Dollars.

The M11 is getting to be almost too inexpensive to resist....

That sounds more like a customs clearance service fee to me. If my Wife carries it home no shipping, no clearance fees. Just the hassle of the VAT refund process. But worth the savings. Italy is offering an extra 5% bonus discount over the VAT refund if I spend over $10,000. May have to pick up a new lens too.

That price was in pounds, not euros

OOPs, I wasn't paying attention. Yeah Britton is not the place to but the M11. Significantly less to buy inside the EU right now. Luckily that is where my Wife is.

She is working with the Leica Store in Florence, Italy.

Resistance is futile. What lens will you buy?

I have not lost this battle with temptation yet. But it gets riskier every day. The Leica store is putting everything in writing for me to review tomorrow. It is likely my Wife has missed some detail or other.

In any case I don't see myself spending almost $4,000 extra to save an additional $300.

On another note, I wonder if this is a momentary opportunity before prices rise? Consider the potential gas shortage in Europe as winter approaches and reports of glass manufacturers cutting back or idling production. Got to wonder how this might affect Leica's lens production, assuming their glass is sourced in the EU (I suppose some could come from Hoya in Japan).
