So many expert Nikon opinions here....So what are the very best all time Nikon sunstar lenses? F Mount and Z Mount. Or what off brands also show amazing sunstars, especially ones that look just as good on the Z mount with adapter. No need for any rounded blades vs straight blades debate. Any feedback appreciated.

My favorite one was AF-S 20mm F1.8G, F mount.
On Z mount, I find 24-120s is not bad at all, even at F11 you get very pronounced sunstars.
Or Laowa 15mm F2, I'm very pleased what's coming out of it.

Recall the 35/2 having defined star but forget how many. Otherwise the early new Gen Sony/M mount Voigtlanders we’re pretty excellent in this regard.

My nominee, at least for DX shooting, is the early pre-AI version of the Nikkor 28/3.5.

14-24/2.8 Z - pretty good
14-30/4 Z - busy and unpleasant
24-70/4 Z - busy and unpleasant
24-120/4 Z - decent

Best sunstars in my experience are some of the Voigtlander lenses. The E Mount versions adapt well to the Z Mount.

Here is the Tamron 35mm 1.4. I have heard the Nikkor 20mm 1.8g is very good as noted earlier in this thread.

Great article from BastianK @ phillipreeve.net about the topic with many examples.

BEST LENSES FOR SUNSTARS

10 straight blades with well defined rays, like some of the Voigtländer + Zeiss Loxia range are also my preferred choice.

12 blades sunstars with the CV 35/2 AL-Z @ f/11.
I really love the Apo-Lanthar's special and very innovative aperture construction, but it's harder to control the strength of the sunstars compared to other Voigtländer lenses.

Vento, Thats a great article. A friend of mine has the Loxia 21mm for one reason only, sunstars. I may have to look into that Lens.

My criteria for amazing sunstar are that there are 18/14-point sunstar and tail of the sunstar have to be long/sharp. I don't prefer 10/12-point sunstar (yes I am talking about Voigtlander) or sunstar with mushy look (Hi, Nikon, Sigma and Sony).

So far, I find that modern Canon lenses (both EF and RF) have some magical rendering of sunstars that fit my liking, and in my opinion the Canon lenses have the best sunstars in comparison with the modern lenses from Nikon, Sony, Sigma and Tamron lenses in general. I will first showcase the EF lenses as they can be easily adapted to Nikon Z camera (Best EF to Z adapter is Fringer EF-NZ). And I use the 16-35 f4 lens frequently on my Z6.

If in EF era, Canon wide-angle lenses are well-known for their sunstars.

1st place. Canon EF 16-35 f2.8 II (considered to be the best by many Canon users)

In RF lenses, it seems that the magical sunstar look has expanded further to mid-range and telephoto zoom lenses. For example,

Canon RF 28-70 f2 (this one surprised me as it was shot at 70mm f/14 by Chris from Dpreview TV)
https://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/3577431182/canon-rf-28-70mm-f2-l-sample-gallery-dpreview-tv/2184300352

Canon RF 70-200 f2.8

On the other hand, in the G/E lenses and Z lenses era, it seems Nikon has prioritized other optical quality over the rendering of sunstar in their lenses design. As a result, many G/E/Z lenses do not produce great sunstar (the entire sunstar looks mushy to me). If you want modern Nikon lenses with great sunstars, the following examples may help you, but they are all in wide-angle spectrum:

Nikon F 20 f1.8 G (Nikon's best modern sunstar lens that can rival Canon's 16-35 ii)

If you don't mind using the good old Nikon D lenses with manual focus only on Nikon Z camera, the following are great options:

(Update on 16 September 2022)
Some new generation Sony lenses strike a good balance in between nice sunstar rendering (though not as great as Canon EF/RF lenses), low physical weight and minimal optical weaknesses. You can adapt them to Z camera with Megadap ETZ21. For example,

Sony 12-24 f2.8 GM

Sony 14 f1.8 GM

Sony 20 f1.8 GM

Took me a lot of time to search online photos!!! Hope this can help.

I use the Canon EF 16-35 2.8III with the fringer pro adapter.. works great and the sunstars are gorgeous. Added it also works on my GFX100s from 19mm-35 with adapter.. Great lens, my favorite wide angle zoom.

Wow!! @jeff_0000, I am not the OP (but I am sure they agree) you put in so much effort into this amazingly detailed reply. Thank you so much, this is why I find FM to be one of the best places for photogs to hang out.

The Nisi 15mm f/4 was designed specifically to produce sunstars, and can do so even wide open.

https://nisiopticsusa.com/discover/nisi-15mm-f4-sunstar-super-wide-angle-full-frame-lens/

It is available in Z mount, although no contacts/camera communication unfortunately.

Hard to say which is best without testing all lenses at the appropriate aperture, but I'm another 20mm f1.8G owner who's happy with the sunstars. I tried out the 1.8S version and kept the 1.8G partly because of this.

In another thread where I posted this, someone pointed out how this lens created sunstars with the water reflections as well. This was only at f11.

Ignore the logo as I just downloaded this shot to a hidden part of my website to share on this site here, but this is another image at f11......taken to show family our new house addition, not to see the stars......so they're not in focus but still perhaps helpful:

THANK YOU JEFF-0000. That was an amazing survey of lenses on this and like people said above it makes these forums the very best.

That Canon 16-35 2.8 Liii is a real pinnacle lens. Razor sharp and beautiful colors. Great sunstars and flare control. And as a bonus it is super sharp in infrared and with no hotspots. Mine is a forever keeper and will be adapted to any system I use despite its huge size.

Thank you for your appreciation! The 16-35 f2.8L iii is really a useful zoom lens for landscape, sunrise/set and astrophotography.

To explain why I think the Canon EF/RF lenses has better sunstar than other brands, here is a short comparison of Canon RF 14-35 f4 L and Sony 14 f1.8 GM (thanks to Christopher Frost)

Canon (07:24)

Sony (05:34)

As you can see from the two photos, the tail of sunstar from Canon lens is spikier than the Sony, especially at the end of the tail.

The Sony lens actually has good sunstar, but the little differences above put Canon EF/RF lenses above Sony and other brands in terms of sunstar rendering.

I do them the old fashioned way. LOOONG xposure and small aperture. Not sure, but I think it was the tamron 24-135.
ETA After checking other photos that day all were within 24-135, so it was likely the Tamrpon 24-135.

If you want to know go to a solid Camera store and try the lenses.

Years back I needed a 75mm for 4x5 - SunStar was a main component of the image the Client needed for his ad series. Called Calumet Photo store in Los Angeles and they got 5 of them in for me to try. We mounted them in Technika mounts, went into the parking lot and composed with the Sun in a corner where the Client images would have it. Shot 5 sheets of Ektachrome 64 - then took to A&I photo lab for quick processing.

When processed we checked them and saw variations. Chose the lens that gave the "best" result and the assignment went well a few days later in the Sierra Nevada range.

No matter what one lens shows there are variations. Direct comparison is the way to see what you are getting.
