p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sharpest L-mount Prime For Panasonic s1r

I own an s1r and I have the 24-105 Panasonic zoom and the Sigma 14-24. I want to really test the hi-res mode with a very sharp prime. Somewhere in the 35-50mm realm. What are considered the sharpest L-mount primes?

Either SL 35 or SL 50 will do.

Edit: Lloyd Chambers subscription site has very persuasive tests of the S1R's high res mode with the SL 90. And the benefits go beyond just increased detail.

Stopped down it's good but there are many better, if all you want is sharpness.

As stated above the SL 35 and 50 are the picks. You only really stop down for DoF. They balance really well on the S1R as well. I have used the 50 and 90 extensively on my S1R. The fast Sigmas are also very sharp. They have a bit more potential CA than the Leica's but they're still very impressive. The Panasonics are behind a bit although they do sharpen up a lot stopped down. They have their own advantages. Low CA. Very little focus breathing and they're very light. They're great if you need video duties.

If you're OK with manual focus the CV APO's will basically match the Leica's at a fifth of the price. And they're tiny. Also the Canon 50mm T/S plays nicely on the S1R with the Sigma adaptor and is very detailed with the benefits a tilt shift lens can bring.

You're spoiled for choice with excellent primes in L mount but basically the SL Leica Summicrons followed by the SIgma Arts. Be warned though. The SL Summicrons are like crack. Very addictive. It's an expensive hole to go down.....

Thanks for all the choices so far. I'm leaning toward the Sigma 35mm f1.2 or the Leica SL 35mm to rent.
Waiting to read more opinions.

Panasonic 50mm 1.4 is insanely sharp, even from wide open, it's the sharpest lens I've used for L-mount.

I'm personally waiting on a native-L DG DN 40mm f/1.4 from Sigma for "normal lens" hi-res imaging on my S1, the adapted EF-mount version already ticks all my boxes for sharpness and contrast and distortion.

Sure. There's always something better, it's just a matter of price. However, being that the OP didn't specify a budget, letting them know there's a very good performer at 1/10 of the price of a SL 50 is valid IMO.

Both good choices. The Sigma 35/1.2 is big and you won't get the best out of the resolution until it's stopped down, but it is a great lens. As long as you're looking at Sigma, though, remember they also make a smaller 35/1.4 and an even smaller 35/2 that are both excellent in their own rights. They're not as exciting as the f/1.2, but they are easier to pack and manage.

That all will probably be a moot point once you've got your hands on the SL 35, though. It's an awfully easy lens to love, despite it's bulk.

Haven't tried any Leica SL glass, but the Sigma 40mm f/1.4, cine lens in a still body one lens experiment is the sharpest I've ever used, that includes the Sigma 35/50/85 f/1.4 primes. You may want to look at the MTF charts in reviews.

Also the leica 35mm sl apo, I would say its sharper, but it costs way more and autofocus is slow.

Beautiful shots.

As they've both been mentioned, I seriously love the Panny and prefer it's rendering, so depending on combination of traits I'm not sure which, it or the Sigma 40 (I have both), I'd recommend you choose, but only judged on sharpness and perceptual resolution, the Sigma 40 inches ahead. It's also heavier and cheaper.

Hi Bernard. I’m assuming this is the Bernard that I know.

I don’t know if I told you or not, but I rented the Leica 35 mm Summicron APO, for testing, from LensRentals.com. It was very sharp and probably arguably the sharpest 35 mm that we can put on this camera. My only problem was that this lens was definitely not calibrated. It was soft on the right outer edge. I have not contacted LensRentals.com yet but I am going to so maybe I can get a discount on my next rental.

I too am interested in finding the absolute sharpest prime lenses possible for this camera in the 35 mm to about 50 mm range. When using the auto pixel shift, HD mode, with the exception of that area on the right hand side, the 190 megapixel files were the sharpest, cleanest files I’ve ever seen in my life. I am working with top phase 1 files, top H-blad files, GFX 100 files constantly.

For super resolution grand landscape, there is no other camera in the world that I would want to use with the exception of maybe the Leica SL2. Which in my test so far seem to be an equal camera to this one with the same superior eight shot pixel shift.

I too am on this same quest. And I’m most interested in the 35 mm range. Then may be the 24 mm range and lastly in the 40 or 50 mm range. Absolute sharpest lens is the highest priority for me, above cost, or auto focus or anything. Also, a lens that has pretty good edge to edge sharpness at the same time.

If you're willing to look at longer focal lengths, Sigma 70mm f/2.8 Macro & Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro . Possiblly Sigma 35mm f/3.5 as well for sharpness.

I've also had good luck using manual focus lenses and adapting them (i.e. Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 for EF) on S1/S1R.
