p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · High School Football test shoot R3

I have been wanting to test out my new R3 for some sports shots. I went out and shot a High School football game to put it through its paces. Shot in Shutter priority with Auto ISO. I started off the AF tracking on to see how it performed. I also wanted to see the ISO capabilities as well. My last Canon body, 1DX, was stellar at the time I bought it but was looking forward to see how the R3 stacked up. The AF tracking worked superbly with my old 400mm with the adapter. In the second half I turned it off to center point focus to see the differences. For me there wasn't much of a difference because I shoot differently as I wait to see where the ball is going then grab focus. Both seemed fine in their applications. The ISO performance was amazing. Shot a few as high as 25600 to see what it could do. I do believe that the highest you can go to preserve a really nice image is 12500. I ran a few of these images through Topaz. I tried to leave a bit of noise to preserve sharpness. I was trying to shoot at a minimum of 1600 of a second. I plan on shooting again and knowing what I know now, i'm sure I will use Shutter priority and stay around 1250th of a second to keep the ISO around 8000.

Thanks for looking.

Joel

Great set J.POW. 4th is nice capture except for the clipped toes ( Nit pick.. )
Do you run the Topaz inside LR/PS or as a standalone app?

Keep sharing!!!

Cheers,
IB

Thank you! I ran it as a standalone on this batch because I like to layer up some to keep a bit of noise in the the high ISO captures....Then transfer both images to PS for processing. Otherwise I would just run it in PS. My next game is Thursday and I plan a way better shoot as I know what I can expect out of the camera. Thanks for the comments!

The hi ISO on this camera is off the charts. I do find the tracking drops heads at a distance, but as it gets closer to full frame, wow.... floors the 1Dx and the 1Dx3, both of which were incredible.

Great job! I've been wanting to try out the R3 to see how it handles rolling shutter distortion in football. I've also heard that it's a little quicker to grab initial focus, wake up from "sleep", and it tracks moving subjects (framing - no blackout).

Agree with the ISO. As far as the tracking, I also agree....I am using an old version EF 400mm 2.8 with the RF to EF adapter. My friend had told me that some people who were using this combination while shooting high speed were having problems grabbing focus quickly after panning over to get action somewhere else other than where you started. In other words, with a RF lens there would be no delay. I don't have any native RF glass so I cant compare. With that being said I still think I can adjust my shooting style to accommodate this deficiency. The price point of the new RF glass that I want is pretty hefty and I don't shoot enough and or make enough to justify the purchase.

Thanks for commenting

A nice set. That R3 performed really well ... or is it the photographer?

Nice set. Good to see tight cropping that eliminates negative space.

Cool photos, the grass looks delicious, I think the Canon body will not get such quality. In addition to photo essays, I have another hobby, which is writing works. In addition to photos, newspaper editors often request works. A resource helps me write https://writingbros.com/essay-examples/daca/ you can find many writing samples here. You can revise them a bit and offer them to the editor. But this is only a part-time job, my main job is working as a photographer in a studio

The one consistent stand out in nearly all these shots is the face/eye captures. I offer you a well deserved pat-on-the-back for your efforts.

I also use the R3 for sports and intend to shoot volleyball soon. I too will be switching my focus point to see what works best. I'm fairly familiar with the sport and have spent hours in dimily lit gyms to get results. I'm hoping to see if my hit rate will improve with the R3_ and based on your results with footbal and high ISO's, I expect it to.

Thanks.
Tom

Thank you Tom. I am very happy with the performance of the R3. I just got the RF 70-20 and the hit rate is much more than with the EF glass with the adapter. It's a noticeable difference. I took this shot of my son below with it...Its is crazy sharp and I have a sequence of about 60 shots which are all razor sharp with focus lock on him as he is going in and out of traffic.
