Thank you for your response! Not even gonna justify Herb's comment with a response lol.

That being said, my issue doesn't show up in any images. When stored and/or transported, this body has always been in a roller case. The only time a body-lens combo has been exposed to the sun is while shooting and I guess maybe when hanging off my shoulder walking from location to location during an outdoor shoot, but that doesn't seem to make sense to me. The camera was never directly facing the sun in these scenarios.

Just as you mentioned, I just am not

There are many people that worry about dust on their sensor that can only be seen at f16+ taking photos of the sky. This reminds me of that. Photos ok? Keep shooting away!

I agree with you except for the fact some damage could be incremental and could worsen over time, coming to a head at a time when the body is no longer under warranty. Best to get it addressed now.

Yes indeed, dust on a lens is VERY different than heat/burn damage around the perimeter of a sensor. Over time, this won't just go away, you can't use a blower or swab to make it go away, and in fact over time, whatever causes that will only continue to do more damage over time, to the point that you are now exposing electronics in that sensor assembly, and likely well outside the warranty period.

Reminds me of some past car designs where the exhaust manifolds were too close to other elements under the hood, like brake lines, fuel lines, air boxes, wiring harnesses, and the damage was so slow, that you were well outside the standard warranty and would have issues later replacing these items at your cost.

I haven't read the other replies. Maybe this has already been pointed out, but it looks like it could be from the sun projected on these areas is melting the surrounding materials.

Keep in mind that the image projected by the lens onto the sensor is upside-down and reversed. So, a typical horizontal image will have the sky/sun in the bottom half of the sensor area (top half of the photo). A vertical image, if shot using the vertical grip, will have the sky/sun in the lens release button side of the sensor.

In your sample images, the melted surrounding material is both at the bottom of horizontal orientation, and bottom of what would be vertical orientation.

Also keep in mind that lenses project an image circle larger than the sensor. Meaning, even if you don't see the sun in the viewfinder or in your images, it might be just outside the imaging area and still projected by the lens into the camera.

There are photos on the web of melted shutter blades caused when photographing the sun, such as during an eclipse. The damage in your camera around the sensor reminds me of this, but on a much smaller scale.

Makes you wonder if frequently shooting Sunrise/Sunset could play a roll to the issue. (lots of intense light coming through lens)

The images look more like some type of black adhesive beading out around the sensor to me. I would think a burned sensor would show melted or severely deformed internals.

I shot the below Solar eclipse time lapse back in 2017 with my old beater 70D + 17-55. The camera was set-up well before the video shows and fired off over 1000 images over the course of about 30 minutes. No solar filter used.

The old girl never missed a beat nor had any ill effects whatsoever from facing the harsh mid day sun.
And it's still capturing a few images to this day whenever I dust it off.

Click the title below the image to see the time lapse on Flickr.

Seems you lucked out and missed that big cloud bank that rolled over after you got the key shots!

Oh man, you're not kidding. I got about as lucky as luck gets before those clouds came in.
Thankfully I got my money shots with my other camera which was my main goal. The time lapse was more of just another fun way of capturing the amazing event.

A ton of time (months) went into being ready to capture the event, but it was well worth it in the end. It was a very rewarding experience.

Incredible shots up there, major kudos! ^

Thank you everybody for your replies! As some have pointed out, I'm hoping to get to the bottom of this so that I a) don't do anymore whatever it is that I may have done to cause this damage, and b) get the damage addressed before it progresses to anything worse

That being said, the body is now back with CPS and I requested specifically that they look at the sensor and surroundings and try to a) provide an explanation as to what it might be and b) repair if needed/possible and identify what exactly they take out and replace.

As mentioned in this thread, my gut tells me it's a sun-related issue, but I simply don't shoot the quantities of backlit shots/other sun photos to cause the damage seen in the photos (I think, but who knows)

Will update here again with whatever CPS says and the final result!

Update from CPS:

Issue identified as "melting of the CMOS light shield plate," with no effect on image quality/performance.

No further details than that, so we may be left guessing how the heck this ended up happening.

Nice like $500+ bill with some knocked off for being a Platinum member (barring any additional damage found)
