p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Point and Shoot Cameras are Basically Dead

https://petapixel.com/2022/08/08/point-and-shoot-cameras-are-basically-dead/

Almost every major camera manufacturer has either openly discontinued its point-and-shoot line of cameras or has not produced a new one in many years, according to a new report. In short, smartphones have all but totally replaced compact cameras.

The compact camera market, colloquially known as point-and-shoot cameras, has been experiencing a massive collapse in worldwide shipments over the last decade and a half. Since 2008, when worldwide shipments reached 110.7 million cameras, the market has significantly shrunk and fallen to 3.01 million units as of 2021 — a 97% drop.

Nikkei reports that in response to the market’s contraction, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Fujifilm, and Sony have all either dramatically scaled back productions or outright admitted that there will be no further compact cameras.

“Although we are shifting to higher-end models, we have strong support for lower-end models, and will continue to develop and produce them as long as there is demand,” Canon tells Nikkei.

Canon denies that it isn’t planning to make new compact cameras, but it hasn’t released a new one since 2019.

Sony’s response echoes Canon’s and the company says that it is not discontinuing new product development in the compact camera space, although Nikkei notes the company hasn’t made a new “Cyber-Shot” camera — its compact camera line — since 2019.

Nikkei reports that Nikon has stopped developing cameras that would fall under its “Coolpix” line, the company’s branding for compact point-and-shoot style cameras. Nikon tells Nikkei that it still sells two high-magnification models and that future production volume will be determined by the market, which as noted, isn’t growing.

Panasonic, which at one point owned the top share of Japan’s compact camera market, tells Nikkei that it has been reducing the volume of point-and-shoots that it has been producing over the last several years in response to the shrinking market. Additionally, while it plans to keep making current compact cameras for the time being, it will focus on developing high-end mirrorless cameras aimed at enthusiasts and professionals, including a camera that it plans to release next year that it is developing in conjunction with Leica.

Nikkei claims Fujifilm has ceased production on its compact camera line “FinePix” and is not actively developing new models for it, instead focusing its efforts on higher-end models like the X100V and above.

Ricoh, which owns the Pentax brand, and OM Digital aren’t mentioned in the story, but Ricoh seems unfazed by the market contraction and has notably released two point-and-shoot cameras in the last year: the WG-80 and the GR IIIx (and later along with its special edition). Ricoh seems immune to making decisions in line with market trends, as it has also stubbornly refused to make a mirrorless Pentax camera, going so far as to say that the brand “cannot go mirrorless.”

It has been a long, slow process, but the death of the point-and-shoot appears all but complete at the hands of the smartphone, whose imaging capabilities manufacturers continue to improve.

They've evolved to the point where they all have phones built-in

There is one place where a P&S might be a great companion - there are some super zoom models that will give you pretty large telephoto capability in a small package. Granted, the IQ isn’t very good and they are limited regarding low light, but for events where a small, discreet pocket camera is appropriate, the P&S is still useful.

Contrast that with a phone camera, that, while very good, it’s near impossible to find a telephoto of more than about a 100 mm equivalent.

I was never a fan of point & shoots (except for my Panasonic LX3 and TS waterproof series), so I'm not heart broken.

On the flip side, I love how Ricoh/Pentax continues to resist giving in to trends! If I weren't so heavily invested into Canon, Nikon and Sony, I would get a Pentax just to show them my support! If they release an updated KP, I'll sell off my Nikon gear to buy one!

Yes, but point and shoot film cameras, at least the excellent ones, are making a comeback. I just sold my Yashica T-4 for $600 on eBay. Contax P&S cameras go for even more.

I thought they were dead years ago, then someone had a little canon, about the size of a deck of cards, if not smaller sporting 24-600 equivalent zoom!! Good luck matching that on phone. Looked pretty cool

Love my G1X3! No cell phone can match its IQ. It is 14 oz of joy for walking around a town we’re visiting or when I have the 100-400 on my main camera. I have the Canon underwater housing which opens a new wold. The market doesn’t care what I think so I bought a spare. Should last the rest of my life since my 2003 G3 still works. 🙂

I used them very much along with a slr much later. Still have my Canon TLb and AE1 slr's. I would also hate to see them go.

Best Buy still had one or two on display. Not even in the same aisle as the rest of the cameras. Definitely a by-gone....

What's clear from these graphs is that the huge chunk of the SLR market made up of Rebels and similar models has also been cannibalized by smartphones.

Demand from enthusiasts and professionals (which you can interpret as most of the mirrorless sales plus some percentage of SLR sales) actually seems to be pretty steady though. The ratio of mirrorless to SLRs amongst this group will continue to widen but maybe without further collapse in the overall ILC market? If so, this would be consistent with Canon's recent statements that the market has "bottomed out".

Maybe the numbers for the last 2 to 3 years, which seem to be holding steady, represent the new baseline.

I know spreadsheet tables are not that useful on a photo forum but I wish it was available for FM.

P & S Cameras were useful to advanced photographers to have handy when they were without their SLR's, but the vast majority of user's were for "snap-shooters" upgrading from instamatics, etc.

It's no wonder, or mystery then, that the advancement in Smart-Phone Camera's, where they can take shots or even videos of typical P & S subjects and distribute them immediately to friends & family via social media, from the same device has driven the P & S market to the brink of extinction.

Not dead to me. I just picked up a new P&S a week or so ago. Yashica-Mat TLR. All it does, is Point and Shoot.

Odds are full frame point & shoots will make up more than 20% of future point & shoot sales. Would not be surprised if they make up nearly 80% before year 2030.

Definitely shrinking but far from dead. The Sony RX100 is still very much in demand for photographers who need a compact pocket camera. And Canon, Olympus and Panasonic makes great compact cameras with decent zoom range for photographers who need a super-small camera with great IQ.

My guess would be that full frame & APS-C point & shoots will make up the bulk of the 1.1-1.4 million units shipped worldwide.

1% of the all time high of 110 million point & shoots shipped in 2008.
