p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · Which lens would you get today?

I already have the 35GM, so that was an easy choice for me I love the lens, which is amazingly sharp even wide open, although its color rendering is nothing special IMO.

As others have said, they two entirely different beasts in many pretty obvious ways so I’m not sure it’s really a very good either/or scenario. If I had a couple grand burning a hole in my wallet then I’d love to try the 35-150 out as a one-lens alternative to the 24-70/70-200 combo. Convenience is, however, its only real selling point for me, which is typical for zooms.

Carrying a big lens as a hobbyist doesn't make a lot of sense for me. I get the versatility and the great quality of the Tamron but the difference between these lenses is not the 1.4 vs the 2.0. Its the heft. I don't need the shot, I want the shot, which gives me the opportunity to improvise with a less flexible focal length lens.

Neither of those lenses would make it into my Top 20 list, so I would vote for "None of the Above".

Seems like I am in the minority. I have the 35/1.4 GM and have the Tamron on order. It is hard to give up a lens like the 35, but I have the feeling that once I get the 35-150 it won't get used enough to justify it (honestly, I barely have used it since I got it). Let's see what happens, but for me, a semi-wide to portrait lens - even at that weight - is more useful for street photography; despite the weight

The 35mm GM is a special lens, excellent sharpness and contrast wide open, yet lightweight. Colors are in my opinion nicer on this lens than on the 135mm GM or 24mm GM (for me, the 85mm GM is the GM lens with the best colors). I'm not in love with the Tamron 35-150mm (unlike many), the rendering is ok but I prefer the 35mm GM by far.

It doesn't seem like the Tamron 35-150/2-2.8 is competitive with a lesser 35mm primes like the Sigma 35/2.

Having neither of those, I would choose the tamron without a doubt. The flexibility/range is just excellent.

I am fascinated by the idea that the 35-150 could be used for street photography? I am not a street photographer myself, but the ones I know try to be extremely discreet with small, unobtrusive gear. The 35-150 seems like the opposite of that? How many Ricoh GRIII’s could fit inside a 35-150?

If you’re a working pro I totally get picking up the 35-150. But for a hobbyist? Seems like a tougher choice, but I don’t like heavy lenses - except in super telephoto where there are no other options.

I guess it depends on your definition of "street", which encompasses very broad ranging styles. I can understand why discrete works for some, and for me that is often a 55/1.8 (which is as discrete as I can get with my lens options). But I also often venture out with a 70-200 for scene compression or to pick out details/faces on the street, so it really all depends. Being somewhat introverted I'm also not the type of person who likes to get in strangers' faces, which often kinda necessary with something like a GRIII and its 28mm lens yet is also not really very discrete. Many of the people I took photos of yesterday in a city park with my 70-200, by contrast, probably never knew they were being photographed.

35GM all the way.
The 35-150 seems plenty of IQ in many ways. But its weight & size

I have both...

The 35-150 lives on my A1 most of the time.

The 35 GM is great when I want something smaller... or for low light.

Well said.

I enjoy the results from my 35GM for most family stuff. It's only when I start trying to get shots at my kids games where it's worth it for me to bring out a zoom. But I think a 70-200 fits my shooting style better. That doesn't take anything away from the Tamron. It's a really impressive lens IMHO.

It'll be different for everyone.
