p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · footwear suggestions for standing in cold water for long time

Hi everyone, I'm curious if anyone has found the perfect boot for standing in cold water for extended periods of time while doing landscapes with a tripod? I'm an experienced hiker but I'm thinking taller than my hiking boots. I'm thinking rain boots are generally not warm enough for cold conditions. Thanks!

I have a pair of LaCrosse insulated muck boots that have worked pretty well. I bought them a size larger in order to wear some heavy socks under them. It may depend on how far you are hiking, but I don't know how good they would be for an extended hike. These are about calf-high. Another option may be light-weight fishing waders. People fishing for trout, salmon, etc spend hours out wading in cold streams. There are several different options in waders other than the standard chest wader.

Hip waders. You can get them with insulation for very cold water. If you plan to stand in deeper water consider chest waders. Lot of choices online.

Try the Airgo Tingley (lightweight, Croc-type material) a size up with wool socks and chemical foot warmers if needed.

These cost next to nothing, have felt insulation, and if you size them properly have room for an extra felt sole and heavy socks. I have stood in water in the middle of the Alberta winter in them for a few hours and was reasonably comfortable. There are versions of this in almost every hunting store in the US and Canada. I suggest going for the cheaper versions which tend to have lighter, more compliant rubber, and weigh a good deal less than the $100+ varieties.

As long as you are not going more than a few hundred yards, you can put snowshoes on them and not hate life during the "hike".

If you can wear rubber boots or waders and stay fully dry, that would be preferable, but if that's not an option (long hikes, anything slightly more technical), you should look into neoprene socks to wear under your boots. A must-have for really wet+cold hikes, canyoneering, and so on where staying fully dry is not an option.

Try NRS Boundary socks. Order a size large enough so you can wear a pair of wool socks underneath and wear all of this under an oversized pair of mesh running shoes.

Tried chest waders in AK recently. My very first time using waders of any kind. I liked them, they kept me warm and dry in knee deep running water. Getting the right fit is a bit of a challenge though if you are using the ones owned by a lodge, as I was.

How deep and how cold and how fast is the water? What are your weight constraints? Are you hiking to the spot(s) or walking a short distance from a parking lot?

In general, think fishing more than photography. What are the salmon and steelhead fishermen wearing in BC? They're probably all arguing bootfoot vs stocking foot, breathable vs neoprene and insulated vs non. But you get the picture - those guys (and girls) spend a lot of time in cold water and would be a valuable resource.

I have a pair of these that I have never used

Bought them because they are more compact than full chest waders and I have never had the need to go more than thigh high

Thanks everyone. Lots of good advice here. I've been prepping for Iceland with thoughts of getting right into the streams and not wanting wet shoes / boots. Also thinking it would be a good idea to get something decent for around here. I like the idea of waders for around home. Was hoping for some rain boots with a better fit and durability for the foot but have been striking out. I thought the Muck neoprene / rubber boots would have been perfect but the size options and the heel box shape won't work at all.

For our trip, I'm running out of time so I think I'll end up just wearing my hiking boots with gators, rain pants and some luck hopefully......and a dry pair of shoes in the car.
