After 13 years and almost 339k this tank is still producing beautiful pics. This is the reason why I admire the D700...

Took it out for a drive today and got a few hummingbird shots.

Do you still own one? Do you still use it?

I do. I love it. It has character and though folks scoff at 12mpx for my purposes at least ir’s fine.
People still talk about the D3 forgetting that the D700 shares many of its features. They also forget about all the know it alls telling Nikon that it was committing suicide by releasing a “baby D3” near-clone so soon after the D3. Lots of handwringing over Nikon cannibalizing D3 sales by putting the D700 on the market for ca. $3.000 under price of the D3. Great camera. Lots of memories and good times with it. Except for a CLA never in the hospital. Zero problems. Been to deserts, marine invirionmentenvironments, the arctic. Never a problem
Best photo purchase I ever made.

The D700 produces the best color, best film-like grains, and best film-like files among all Nikon DSLRs. It is equipped with a sensor developed by Nikon that makes it the king of color. After the D700, Nikon abandoned its own DSLR sensor development to save money, and instead they have opted for ready-made Sony sensors that are terrible in color rendition. To me, Nikon's DSLR development went down hill after the D700. 12MP is more than enough for my use when you consider 4K is only 8MP in resolution. In fact, I'm entertaining the idea of dumping all my Z stuff and going back to the D700 only. That's why I just picked up one from the B&S board a few weeks ago.

Mine was converted to deep (850NM) IR. Nobdy wanted to buy a camera with a fogged rear screen.

You can get rid of the fogged rear LCD in less than 15 minutes. All you need to do is take the back panel off and clean the plastic panel on the top of the LCD. There are only four small screws holding the back panel. Download a D700 a service/repair manual or watch this video:

I did remove the rea panel on mine to replace the multi-selector switch ribbon and I also cleaned the rear LCD glass. The ribbon was $15.oo on the bay. I kept a record of the process.

Thanks! I actually put it in a bag with a bunch of silica gel for a few days. That cleared it up.

If that's the case, what you had was a different issue. Lots of foggy back LCD screen were caused by the 3M glue Nikon used to seal the LCD protection screen in place.

My case appeared to be moisture. I always assumed it was the glue but I saw somewhere that some wee cleared up by desiccant. I ran across some in a sealed bag and tried it. I let it sit for about a week and it cleared up. If I ever get a day without my hands shaking I will fix the peeling grip.

The D700 was a great camera. It was my first full frame and I loved it. The baby D3.

Interesting comments about the great color. I remember going from my D3S or D3 (can't remember which) to a D4 and D800's and not liking the colors as much. Even now with a Z9 I often feel like I don't get the color just right. I also think there is something about those "fat" pixels that was just pleasing.

I felt the exact same way about the 12mp Canon 5D. Every digital camera since then has been missing SOMETHING that that camera could provide. It’s hard to quantify.

I made a short video on replacing the grips on this one. Not perfect but its still holding after more than 2k exposures. It may be helpful to you.

Thanks. Are JIS screwdrivers needed?

I used Teckman Phillips for that job but I prefer the Wera JCIS screw drivers.

I love this camera. It's not as fast in a lot of ways as newer cameras - and I'm not going to give up my A9 to go retro. But I love the D700 for its simplicity and character of colors it produces. Plus, the body and lens kit here represents an $800 investment. Both pieces are in stellar condition. And, frankly, I wasn't a fan of the big switch to SD cards. Yes, yes, this made room for other goodies inside a lighter camera body. HOWEVER, a CF card is a BEAST and it's large enough to ergonomically handle easily - and, pretty much everybody I know has put at least one of them through an entire wash cycle but didn't lose any images and still had it continue to function.

I'm a photojournalist so I primarily shoot people. I admire all you wildlife folks as I do not have the patience to completely go that route - and it's not my task anyway.

From yesterday's assignment, exif shared:

Great set of images! the 85 1.4 is perfect for that purpose too. Super sharp wide open, gives you a little extra separation for better bokeh and not crowding your subject. The D700 is just one those cameras that you just wanna have around for great pics and comfort!

Just checked mine....sitting at 159,859 clicks.

I believe I'm the second owner. Bought her here about 10 years ago. My first FX body...coming from a D7000.

Like others have commented, this body has spoiled me on all-things dealing with color. Never was satisfied with colors coming out of other Nikon DSLRs preceding the D3/D700 sensors....D810 and D5 were very flat to me...so always centered on using a pair of D3s and the D700 for portrait-based work.

She gets out often to augment projects or to be at the ready to take cameo photos like the one below taken last fall.

We're in it for the long haul and if/when she totally goes inoperable, she'll be memorialized on the book cabinet along with the family photos.
