Are they grey market? I am only talking about the lenses fulfilled by them, not all the lenses sold on the site.

I have bought lenses fulfilled by Amazon four or five times. Two arrived opened and used instead of new. One even arrived with the wrong lens in the wrong box. However I have bought several lenses from third parties on amazon after checking if the seller was an authorized dealer and never had one issue.

They certainly could be grey because Fulfilled does NOT mean Sold By. Any third party seller can send their stuff to Amazon to store and ship for them. Amazon offers them as Prime eligible but they are still sold by third parties so it could definitely be Grey. The only way I would buy lenses or cameras from Amazon would be Sold By or offered by a third party I’m familiar with. I think Adorama sells there; I’d buy from them but never Fulfilled. Like the other poster said-buy from the authorized dealers selling via Amazon or directly from them if possible.

Amazon as a rule ships expensive Sony lenses in an otherwise empty oversized box or worse yet, in a padded envelope.

Support real camera shops directly and avoid buying lenses from Amazon.

Just asking the question. My local camera has no 70-200 oss it's and I would be 4th on the list when they get one once a month. I have spent thousands there.

I rarely say “never” but buying a lens from Amazon is something I will try to avoid doing ever again.

Twice they have shipped lenses in nothing but the OEM box in a padded envelope while shipping a broom in an overly protective box in a box. Idiots.

Amazon is not the best place to buy a lens, but they are huge and can and do swallow the loss of multiple returns as good as anybody, and not only that, they will throw money at you to solve a problem.

I buy a ton of products from Amazon, but do not purchase camera equipment from them, other than accessories.

They, too often, sell open box and otherwise used cameras and lenses as new. Some of their third party suppliers can, indeed, supply grey market items (even when shipped directly by Amazon). Keep in mind that Amazon does not source all of their items directly from the manufacturer.

I'm sure there will be folks that respond, on this thread, that they have never had any problems with Amazon, but why take a chance when there are so many high-integrity sources available?

Their shipping packaging is not always geared to sensitive equipment, leading to bashed cartons and possible equipment damage.

Some of their battery and memory card suppliers ship counterfeit items (again, even if shipped directly by Amazon). Dealers like B&H and Adorama source directly from the manufacturer.

Thank you. I have bought directly from Adorama, B&H, Roberts Camera and a local camera shop. It just so happens that no one has the 70-200 on stock.
There only lens I have bought thru Amazon was a Samyang 85 1.4 on Black Friday from Digital Goja.

They don't control their supply chain. I got a counterfeit $25 Arduino board from an authorized seller of Arduino boards because Amazon shipped a unit from a seller other than the authorized seller I deliberately selected (and to whom I had to pay a premium). Don't trust Amazon with lenses. As others noted, buy from reputable dealers. If you can buy locally, do so, as your local community can always use a boost.

I buy local quite often. I don’t want to wait 2 months on a list when football starts the 2nd. I either find a 70-200 oss ii or use my 70-180.

Amazon does an absolute crap job of packaging lenses, so there is a reasonable chance that damage could occur. They do have terrific return policy though, so unless you are in a time crunch, you are not really losing anything.

As far as whether a vendor is selling gray market or not, you need to check specifically on the vendor. Some are gray market and some are not. I would contact them directly and ask. If they do not explicitly state that the warranty is the manufacturer's warranty, then it is most likely gray market.

In buying through Amazon, it can pay to buy from an authorized vendor for the item that you are interested in and have it fulfilled through that vendor.

Although I prefer Amazon as the seller, several companies use Fulfilled by Amazon. The problem as AB mentions above, is simply TERRIBLE packaging. I've had $1,000 lenses shipped in a plastic Tyvek bag, not once, but three times. No protection whatsoever beyond what's in the lens box.

I'm an Amazon fan but that truly pisses me off and leaves me with no trust that the lens doesn't have a problem, or will, from being banged around.

There are several 70-200 f2.8 GM lenses for sale on B/S board on this site. At least one is BNIB.

Correct. I would like a factory warranty if I could. I've been weighing my options.
