Apparently Tamron likes making unusual zoom ranges. No idea why, but this, like the 35-150, just leaves me thinking I'd be frustrated by the lack of width/reach at each end of the zoom range. Maybe I'm just used to the more traditional zoom ranges.

After much research and analysis of my past images I opted against the 35-150 and went for the traditional f/2.8 lens duo covering 24-200mm. If I ever need a wide zoom I'd probably now skip this one too because it would only give me another 4mm on the wide end

As a backpacker I'm highly interested in this lens, I'll be interested to see how it turns out and what the price will be. Yeah 50mm would have made this a must buy, but 20-40mm is still a nice range IMO. This season I swapped over to a 24 2.8G, 40mm 2.5G and Sigma 90mm on an a7c. I really like this combo but switching between 3 lenses is a bit of a pain.

I would be surprised if the image quality isn't as good as the 17-28 or the G2 28-75. Tamron hasn't released a bad lens on the e mount.

This small and light lens can be a single lens for backcountry landscapes and astro. With the sigma 90 and some cropping you cover almost everything, fitting in a small hip pack. The 17-28 and CV50 is a similar set up but requires more lens changes and has less reach.

I just did a long hike with the 16-35 PZ and Sigma 90--this new lens would fit into that role perhaps even a bit better (depending on where you want the reach and if you need the extra stop).

This is an obvious companion lens for the 35-150, which has been more successful than even Tamron thought it would be. With that 2 lens combo, most working pros could achieve everything they need to. It's a 2 lens replacement for the holy trinity, with small compromises at the wide and tele ends.

Looks like a perfect range for my walk around needs…although, I don’t really need another lens. Now, if they’d just make it even smaller and constant f/4, that would be awesome. Yeah, I know, I’m weird. 😁

I guess I would think the 17-28 is the obvious companion lens to the 35-150? I do often carry my 20G and 40G together, but I don't think I'd replace those with a zoom.

I initially thought this was an APS-C lens and intended as a companion for the 11-20

20-40mm 2.8? Yes indeed. I shoot occasional 24mm (Sometimes wish just slightly wider)..and then mostly 35 and 40mm. I'm literally the guy they designed this lens for.

Pre-ordering when available.....

I will stick with my Sigma 17-50 f2,8. Much lighter than my Tamron 15-30. Smaller too.

50mm at the long end and 4-8mm at the wide end (depending on whether 12-24 or 16-35 is your third zoom of the trinity) are a bit more than “small compromises” IMO, but everyone has different needs and finances.

Many of the compacts in this range are compromised at their widest aperture and/or lack the OOF rendering to really stand out over their zoom counterparts. If this lens manages to be excellent in the center throughout the range, then you've got a real option to skip over quite a few of them. If not all of them. It won't be for everyone, but hey....

For those of us who live in the 24-40mm range with compact primes, this may be a real win.

Lots of people have talked about replacing their 70-200 with the 35-150 and finding they don't miss the extra 50. High resolution cameras have changed how people are approaching their work.

Tamron has a history in this FL...If memory serves, Tamron made a 20-40 from the mid 90s to the mid 2000s. I had the Tokina 19-35 at the time, but seriously considered replacing it with the Tamron for that bit more on the long end.

It's an interesting choice; small and fast. I'll have to seriously think about what I'd use more, say, 17mm or 40mmm...

I wouldn’t go as far as saying 2.8 is fast. Even with my 1.8 / 2.0 primes, I find quite often wanting more aperture. I’ve bumped into iso 12,800 on many occasions.

I hope that IQ is up there with the 17-28, but being touted for vlogging makes me think it won't be in same class. If it is however, I would consider one for sure as I think it's better pairing for my 12-24G than the 17-28 by a long way.

It definitely is NOT internal zoom from the image however.

3 lens travel combo would be maybe 20-40, 24-105, 100-400 or maybe 20-40, 35-150, 200-600.

It's as fast as zooms get, barring the new 35-150. When using 'fast' in that context, I don't think the B&B here think there are f/2 zooms about.

So yes, small, fast. But no, not prime fast.

Are you saying the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 is crap?
If you are, how can you claim a lens is crap before it’s been released?

That’s definitely an opinion. One I disagree with, like your opinions in other threads where you say Sony GM lenses are “flat”. We will have to agree to disagree.

Interesting. I can see the allure, compact size and light weight, nice companion to the 35-150 or 28-75.

Still, it's not for me. I prefer my UWA zooms to start somewhere between 14 and 16mm on the wide end. A compact 15-30 2.8 would be nice, but the best we might get is a more compact, lighter version 2 of the 16-35 GM, I suppose.

I would say this is slightly suboptimal. I currently own a 17-40/4 which I'm happy with, but has old optics. The idea of this new Tamron is appealing, but the zoom range here is limited. I would have prefered something like a 17-40ish, with more wide angle coverage. Doesn't have to be f/2.8 either in my opinion.

Tamron seems to be all about going against market expectation or what traditionally makes the most sense
