Have been seeing some crazy good deals on these and beings it is the last aps-h sensor, is this still a viable camera to purchase and own?

No! I love this camera, but Canon no longer makes or sells parts for it, so no repair shop will touch it if the repair requires parts. I checked on this with both Midwest and KEH.

There's a reason that obsolete cameras are dirt cheap.

If you buy one online, make darn sure you can return it to the seller if it's defective. Also be prepared to write off the cost if you take the bet and lose.

My assessment: Just say no. Find something else.

I guess it depends on each person's budget and risk tolerances, but $300-500 doesn't seem overly risky (if the seller is reputable in respect to DOA returns, etc.). When it dies, buy another one.

There are a couple ways to look at this. Buy a relatively current used camera with service support at a higher price. If something goes wrong it can be fixed, but you will pay for the repair because it's no longer covered under warranty. Camera repairs can easily be $300-500 or more. Plus, the longer you keep it, the more it depreciates.

Or, buy good condition IVs and replace as they expire. Each replacement would be similar in price to the repair of a supported camera. And with the low initial outlay, there's much less depreciation over time. After collecting a few IVs, you might have a sufficient parts pool to keep one in service. But that would have to be weighed against the cost of an actual repair, if you can still find someone to do it. It would probably be cheaper to keep buying good condition bodies. Eventually you'll be able to transition to the 1DX and 1DXII at that price point and continue the cycle.

This of course assumes you're OK with being a few generations behind current technology. For many applications, it would be completely sufficient.

What Ron said.

I sold my 1DX about six years ago, after I stopped shooting sports and etc., but I kept my 1DIV until late last year. The 1DX was still worth a lot of cash, in 2016, but the 1DIV was not. Especially, not when you consider the 1DIV's capabilities, which are great. The 1DX is better in some respects, but the 1DIV is no slouch. At current prices, it's a steal. OTOH, I'd buy a 1DX.

I just happen to have a 1D mk IV laying around. Might have to look into selling it, since I do not use it at all.

Are there $6.5k brand new cars being sold these days? I know it was possible back in late 2009/early 2010 but today... I know that's a price of a used car or a brand new motorcycle.

Okay... I exaggerate... but it feels that way!

I agree. $400 for a good condition 1DIV is the same cost as some repairs for a newer camera.

As for the O.P.'s question about AF setup, the 1DIV isn't very complicated for AF settings compared to newer cameras. It's really just a choice of whether you want to use back button focus or not.

Like the 1d4 so far for some reason really like files out of the apsh sensors. I have been enjoying shooting with the vintage bodies as of late for fun anyways take my newer bodies for jobs, but for fun oldies are still goodies. Been kicming around a 1d3 just to have the whole line up lol.

I liked the 1DIII's sensor. It seemed like a real step up over the 1DII/IIn bodies. But it was the 1D generation with which I had the most problems. The biggest was the flaky/inconsistent AF performance in bright light higher temperature conditions. One body required massive micro focus adjustment changes when going from low Kelvin (tungsten) lighting to fluorescent or daylight. And one had a persistent one pixel wide white line across the frame that became more noticeable at higher ISOs. Canon tried changing a bunch of components but ultimately it required a new sensor... Before that was finally resolved, my workaround was to run images through a PS script that shifted the image one pixel to cover the defect...

If you're curious about the 1DIII, try the 1DIIIs instead. I briefly had a loaner and really liked that sensor.

Thanks. I liked my 1DIV, but I felt it still had remnants of the 1DIII's AF foibles in certain conditions. The 1DX felt more like a clean slate total rebuild type of product (in respect to AF performance).

Maybe it's rose tinted glasses, but I feel like the 1D2 was an absolute bulldog at center point tracking of subjects closing on the camera. It would grab on and hold on, and didn't care how fast they were coming at you. While the 1D3/1D4 feel like they're hoping for a transition to panning after getting an initial bite and basically never recover.

It would be nice to know if the 1DX does any better, but I don't shoot any sports anymore.

I was not aware the mk4 was obsolete. I use mine all spring long for daytime sports. If it breaks and can't be repaired, at $400 a copy, I could just get another. I always look forward to using it.

I love mine even after 8,5 years of hard work, and the purchase of a Nikon Z9. When I need two bodies to shoot with, the 1D goes along for the ride, and the results are as good as ever.

I think it was the first Canon camera that never went obsolete. The 5D Mark II had (intentionally) lousy AF and slow shooting speed, the 1D Mark III had much less resolution, the grainy screen and maybe the AF problems that other people reported (also no video), whereas the 1D Mark IV had - and still has - anything a user might want. Sure, it had no articulating screen but it was an intentional design decision, and none of the 1DX series bodies have one, either.

I don't know how cross compatible are the 1DX batteries, though? Still better than the NiMH units in the 1D Mark II N, for sure ...

BTW the fact that 1D Mark IV accepts SD cards is a great boon to my workflow. No need for external readers or cables, just put it into the laptop's built in slot and offload dem pics...

At $400, if it even goes belly up, you can likely sell it as repair/for parts for $200, so I would not worry one bit about what happens if it fails in the future.

People buy those cameras, take them apart, and sell the parts for many times what they buy the broken camera for.

That being said, the 5D4, minus the burst rate, is a better APSH body IMO. After cropping for apsh, I have a bit more resolution, better IQ, just as good AF for sports, better WB, cheaper batteries, and is FF when I need that. I loved my 1D4, but after a while of owning the 5D4, I don’t miss it all that much.

I loved my 1DIV but I have to say that the AF was not so reliable in some situations. In fact, when I got a 5DIII, I ended up using it more just because the AF was more reliable. Others here seem to have a different experience but when I moved to the 1Dx series, it was significantly better.
With my IdIII and IDIV, I would often over shoot (backlit situations, low contrast uniforms) knowing that several images in a series might be oof.
I never have had that fear since the 1Dx

If you drop the 1DmkIV while climbing cliffs, they are inexpensive to replace.

The 1D IV is still a very capable camera. I drag it out when I need a third body or to use for a remote, etc. The auto focus was fine too. I used a 1D Mark II with an old 14mm Sigma last year to shoot a time-lapse of the construction of a plating line. I had a it connected with an AC adapter. 40 days/10 hours a day of taking pictures every 30 seconds. Work like a charm. ..... I gotta get rid of some cameras

I too own the 1dm4. Its a great camera. The current limitations were note above but every camera has them. I’ve not been able to find a canon battery but Amazon has off brands. Make sure a charger comes with it. I’ve shot everything from macro to telephoto and the images are great. It does not have efcs but it does has silent mode (shutter locks up for continuous shots), has live view, but no stacking app. I’ll probably keep mine till it dies but it is well built and can take a lot. I’ve not had any issues with it.
