Have been seeing some crazy good deals on these and beings it is the last aps-h sensor, is this still a viable camera to purchase and own? I have loved my precious aps h cameras but never owned the IV very tempting at the 3-500 range i have been seeing them go for. What says the majority on this?

If that's your budget range then yes you can't go wrong. It's a very very good camera for a few hundred bucks.

It's a fantastic camera to use and it does a lot of things well. However, since it's a design from 2009, you will definitely see limitations in certain areas.

If you are using it for other stuff besides sports or events, it doesn't do RAW HDR very well in case you want to use "motion compensation". The sensor really shows its limitations here, some parts of the file need to be pushed here quite a bit and you will get some extreme noise.

For lens micro AF adjustment - it only lets you to set up one position, which naturally works for primes, but zooms might need different settings for wide and tele.

The white balance needs some adjusting, especially the tint slider - way too green files (at least to my taste), while the newer sensors I currently use (R6 and 5DIV) need much lesser adjustments. R6 usually nails the tint portion of white balance for my taste.

And depending on your taste, sharpening needs and noise reduction capabilities, the realistic high ISO limit for this camera is around 5000 - 6400.

I have a 1dx2 that i enjoy but kind of miss the 1.3 sometimes and thought as a bomb proof body to throw on firetruck with me as well as some wildlife for the money may still be a good option. Although price of 7dmk2 has been coming down as well since r7 maybe thats a better option, but then you have the 1.6 crop sensor

If you already have 1DX2, you will see a visible difference in noise capabilities as well as the ability to push the underexposed files. Like I said I use R6 now which has essentially the same sensor as 1DX3 and the difference is dramatic. I can shoot 1 stop underexposed or even lower, and bring it back in post with virtually zero penalty. You would be suffering on 1DIV if you did that. On the other hand, the newer sensors handle overexposure differently compared to the older designs such as 1DIV. You can recover a bit more from overexposure on the older sensors compared to newer ones. YMMV.

I loved my 1D Mark IVs and agree with most of the other comments. If 16 Mpx is enough for your needs, then it would be a good value for the price right now.

One tip I can pass on if you use an Adobe workflow: Consider using the Adobe Color profile in lieu of the Camera Standard profile when processing your RAW files. This is one of the rare Canon cameras where I find that Adobe's color science works better.

Noise can be excessive above ISO 3200. And if you have to push shadows much you can see some ugly color splotching. But I imagine that DXO PureRAW would help.

On the other hand on the other hand, highlight recovery was very good with these cameras and I used to love the files I got when shooting in bright sun.

I keep my 1DIV mostly for posterity, and also because it's a wonderful camera if you're aware of its limitations. One to consider is that it's now "Canon Obsolete", so Canon won't service or supply parts for it and repairs—if not already impossible—will get increasingly hard to get. If you get serious about one of these, at least check the shutter count and make sure it's nowhere near the rated life.

Then, it depends on what you want to shoot. The shutter's quite loud (at release, I remember people posting YouTube videos just to show off the "machine gun" sound), so I avoided using it for most indoor events where it could be disruptive. I feel that it's not very usable above ISO 800, although in a pinch I'd use it up to ISO 3200.

Other than that, it's nice. Tracking BIF is excellent and overall capabilities have been fine for me. It's pretty much a bulletproof camera. I, too, miss the APS-H format, but the pixel densities of the 5DIV I moved to (and now the R5) more than compensate for the sensor format. As noted, its MFA is only capable of 1 correction on zoom lenses, but I never noticed an issue from that as long as I MFA'd properly.

BTW: I used my 1DIV as a loyalty trade-up to a second R5. Canon let me keep the 1DIV camera (which is perfectly functional), but it's "loyalty value" is gone. If you're thinking of doing the same with a 1DIV, check with the owner and verify that it hasn't been used as I did.

My previous aps h sensors just seemed to have a. Ore film like feel to the files nkt sure since before the 1dx last 1 series was a 1dmk2n i owned. Probably have to give it a go will give me a little extra reach and maybe grab it when conditions just make me not want to take my other bodies.

Long as you don't mind the weight, its fine, with fantastic files that are easy to work with.
Considering its age I think it did a great job with tracking BIF.
It just got a bit too heavy for me, but other than that it is one very nice Pro camera.

Look out for the battery, it's expensive and the charger is too. Definitely try to get one having the charger at least. But the iq is there imo based on online files. High iso maybe even better than 24mp aps, which is still current which I've used 6400 pretty regularly on.

32k sounds like a steal to me!

You do not need our permission to buy it. Just make sure you buy it from a hobbyist owner who babied their copy.

At $400, it's a really nice camera. The AF is good, but obviously not as good as a 1DX or 1DX Mark II.

Nah... you don't even need to worry about the camera having been babied. The thing is a tank. I deliberately bought one that is heavily brassed and was used hard by a pro as a remote. The price was fantastic and it still takes stunning images. Perfect for using as a high risk position remote or out on the kayak where I might not want to be carrying the price of a new car. I know one very seasoned pro who has kept several 1Div bodies for shooting with strobes in big arenas -- he just gets better results with them, and he is VERY picky.

I have a mk IV that was very heavily used, but the current shutter has a very low count on it (less than 19K!!).

There are times I need two cameras with different lenses to switch off fast. I had been ising a 5Dmk IV and an 80D for this, and when my 80D started acting up I was going to bring out my 5Ds, but took the 1D IV instead for a trip to Road America.

I was quite pleased with the results, and have had it out a few more times recently as my backup.

FWIW, I LOVE the report it gives when shooting.

I'd pick the 1DIV over a 7DII if I had the choice. Though I only had a short time with the 7DII, for sports action too often I felt like I was fighting its AF inconsistencies and hesitations. While the 1DX (first version) improved AF performance over the IV, I happily used the IV for many years.

No! I love this camera, but Canon no longer makes or sells parts for it, so no repair shop will touch it if the repair requires parts. I checked on this with both Midwest and KEH.

There's a reason that obsolete cameras are dirt cheap.

If you buy one online, make darn sure you can return it to the seller if it's defective. Also be prepared to write off the cost if you take the bet and lose.

My assessment: Just say no. Find something else.
