I think it's the general decline in photography as a whole. It's not 2005 anymore. No one's excited about the D2Xs successor or when will Nikon go "full frame". Gone are the days of seeing everyone lugging a huge DSLR with huge lens and stack of CF cards. Everyone's just glued on their cellphones scrolling videos on tiktok or IG. That's my take.
Sorry for derailing the thread. Please continue with political discussions.
Even though the overall photography market is a lot smaller than it once was, primarily due to the domination of smartphone photography, I disagree with you. And the reason I say that is because the last PhotoPlus NYC show, which I guess was October of 2019, was extremely well attended. In fact, it was hard to move through the show at times and it was hard to get seats at the photographer sessions.
What is true is that Nikon, IIRC, never released anything new at that particular show. Also, Sony didn't attend the last show - they held a separate event outside the show, but nearby. Leica stopped exhibiting as well. But for traditional photographers, I think they're very interested in what is coming next from each manufacturer. The threads on this site prove that.
I do think that the Create show was an attempt to address a younger generation who shoot with smartphones. Probably sounded good on paper. But it was probably too much of a change. What they probably should have done was to do the Create show within the traditional PhotoPlus show. After all, Comic-Con is still held at Javits, so I think younger people and hipsters would have shown up. Maybe Javits raised their rates so much to make up for pandemic losses that the show wasn't viable.
In any case, it will be interesting to see if the Create show stilll happens in 2023. But if they charge what they were going to charge for the 2022 show, I won't be there.
