Oystercatchers and Skimmers are among Mother Nature's gift to photographers with their high contrast and brilliant beaks.
This one was King or Queen of the Hill. From our skiff we just watched it dance around the hilltop happy to enjoy the day.

Great shots, like how you cropped each image, that includes the blurred sky line. Am guessing by the shadows that it was mid day, the color and feathers details are excellent and the shallow depth of field at f/8 aperture is spot on. Were you using a 600mm lens, the angle of view is excellent.

For the last 2 months have been experimenting with the Z9, am curious which focus mode you used, maybe wide area or 3D tracking?

All the best,
rand

Hi rand. Thank you for the kind words. Yes unfortunately it was mid day on our way out to look for skimmers. I really enjoy the Z9 and have no Z mount lenses yet, I do have an order in for the 800mm - I also had follow my doctor's orders and stop holding my breath waiting for the 200-600 Z. I was using the 500 f4 G lens with the 1.7 TC on a tripod/gimbal. We were on a skiff so we were bobbing in the water. I pretty much use Wide Area for birds, if I am on land and they are sitters I switch to spot.

Lovely images Bob. Some photographers struggle to maintain detail in the blacks and whites at the same time. You did fine in this regard as well as nice compositions from a low angle.

Hi,

The 500mm f/4 G is and excellent lens, I had forgotten about the 1.7 TLC and the f/4 iis excellent for wildlife. Have the 800mm ordered also and not sure I can wait either, if I don't have it by January will either get the 500mm pf or a different system. Have the Z 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 lens, its very good for a variable focal length lens, but it does not come near to the f/4/ f/2.8 to f/2 in image rendering. I do think it will be excellent for video when ever I can handle it for the Z9 on the computer. Have posted photos of oyster catchers using the Z9 with 100-400mm lens here when the light was excellent. Have sold my longer telephoto lens and will only use the tripod for landscape and portraits now. The biggest problem I have with the Z9 is low light shots, am so used to the D5 which you can shoot in any light, that whyI asked about focus mode.

Thanks again,
rand
