Hi FM members - Need help with ideas on my upcoming trip to CO Sep 30 - Oct 7 2022

Primary purpose is photographing fall colors in CO. Haven't been to this part of the country, yet. It is ok if I don't catch the absolute peak. I can't come earlier than Sep 30th.

I don't like check-in, check-out every other day, so need a base camp. I will fly in to Denver.

Base camp options I am thinking about:

Option 1: Gunnison as the base camp

Option 2: Aspen as the base camp (too crowded?)

Option 3: Estes Park or Loveland. Will these two would be too far up North at this time of the year for fall foliage?

Any ideas appreciated.

Did Gunnison last year for the same purpose. I was there from Sept 26th to Oct 1st and it was wonderful. Gunnison is a great little town. Much less touristy than Crested Butte about 25-30 minutes to the north.

Done Gunnison, great. Also Durango ride train to Silverton, million dollar highway and Telluride near by.

Timing can be difficult to predict for color. It's all about rainfall and when the cool temperatures finally settle in. It could be that higher mountain areas are peaking while lower areas still are lighter with little change. Or it could be the high country has already peaked where you're at, and you may want to explore lower areas.

Aspen will indeed be packed, though there is a LOT to see in that area, including Independence Pass.

Estes Park will also be packed that time of year and Rocky Mountain National Park is requiring permits to access the park in general (midday) and Bear Lake Road (for the majority of the day). If you base camp around the park, you will want to wind up down Bear Lake Road. There's a pretty epic location looking down over Bear Lake through the Aspen. When they'll stop requiring permits I don't recall, but I think it's just after the fall color period. That's typically the time of year one would expect peak colors in the park though. You can also take Hwy 7 out of Estes Park for an area popular with "leaf peepers", though most chances for photography are off the side of the road. You could take some side roads here and there to explore. Another option for Rocky Mountain National Park would be to stay on the Grand Lake side. (west side of the park) It would likely be less crowded than Estes, has some beautiful lakes, and a lot of moose. Unfortunately, the area was ravaged by a wildfire two years ago, so to catch big batches of color, you'll likely want to take Trail Ridge Road over the divide and back down towards Estes Park. When I think of someone making their maiden trip to CO, I'd want somewhat of a CO experience, and Loveland would not provide that. It's a smallish front-range town among a bunch of larger front-range cities. Stay closer to the mountain and avoid driving through the canyon to get to the mountains.

Gunnison/Crested Butte would be the spot I'd suggest - unless you wanted to go further south to Durango/Telluride areas. Though my guess is that those may not be as colorful as you'd like that early. Usually peak color down there is about a week or two after the northern part of the state, that in a typical year will be good the time you're planning.

In a normal year, your time frame would be great. Let's hope this year is a normal one. It started out real dry, which can lead to faded colors. However, we've had some timely moisture, and temps are starting to moderate. I was down in Ouray area a couple of weeks ago and the flowers were still going quite strong. so it looks positive.

As for locations, Estes and RMNP is fine, but not really the best for fall colors. My advice for folks coming to Colorado for their first burst of colors is to take Bob Seger's advice and "Get out of Denver", and get yourself down to Crested Butte, Ridgway, Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride just as fast as possible.

Aspen is great ... there is a lot to see, though Maroon Bells is difficult as it's a full-on zoo. Instead, head over to Ashcroft, and head up Independence Pass (with a stop at the Grottos). Still, I'd place Aspen lower on the list as it's too crowded, too expensive, and too over-done.

Gunnison is a great base. The town is good, with some nice places to eat, and affordable places to stay, but you'll be driving every day. The trip up to Ohio Pass is easy, and very worth it. And from there up to Kebler pass is also easy. That said, if it were me, I'd rather stay in Crested as that cuts 3-45 minutes off the drive each way. I'd plan on spending 2-3 days here.

Ridgway or Ouray as a base for the rest of your trip makes a lot of sense. Owl Creek Pass, County Rd 8, County Rd 5, County Rd 7, Last Dollar Road, Crystal Lake, Red Mountain Pass, Chimney Rock, Wilson Peak, the list is endless. It will be crowded, but not as bad as Aspen, both because it's further from Denver and because there are so many places to shoot.

Also, if the color ran fast, you can head south on 550 to Durango where color tends to hang on. And if it's all gone, head west from where you cut over to Telluride on 145/141 along the San Miguel River for some cool red rock shooting.

Good luck, and post your results!

Thank you! Will certainly ping when I make it there. I know it is always a hit or miss with leaf peeping, but nonetheless looking forward to my first Colorado trip.

BTW, lovely pics!!!

Would definitely recommend the Ridgway/Ouray/Telluride area over the Estes Park/Loveland options for your dates.

Did a similar trip last year ; which was a great year for color in CO I have heard. Todd's advise above is spot on!

I think you are going to hit the timing about right for Central and Southern Colorado. I make an annual trip to Gunnison and have for several years. I'll be there again Oct. 3-8th. Gunnison is a good place to start your trip and I would forgo Estes Park (the peak season for leafs in N. Colorado is the third and last week of Sept.

As long as you are mobile you can move easily from Gunnison. You can visit Crested Butte/Ohio Pass/Kebler Pass. You can also make a loop along the North Rim of the Black Canyon (always lots of color along the gorge) to Paonia. You can travel back east across Kebler Pass to Crested Butte and down to Gunnison. From Gunnison you're also not (relatively) far from Owl Creek Pass (word of caution - CDOT has a major construction event going on west of Sapinero. They've been doing one-lane traffic escorts. You'll get through but it may add 1/2-1 hour to your drive during construction. Check the CDOT website for more information).

You may want to also visit Dallas Divide west of Ridgeway and drop down into Telluride. Lizard Head Pass is a drive often overlooked in most forums but it would be an excellent area to visit. If you want to visit this area I would recommend shifting from Gunny to Ouray or Telluride for a couple of days. How mobile are you? 2-3 nights in Gunnison and 2-3 nights in Ridegway? Some private campgrounds in Gunnison (we stay at KOA) and Ridgeway State Park has a couple of campgrounds...or the Ouray KOA.

Places you must see: Kebler Pass, Dallas Divide, Ohio Pass & The Castles.
Places you should try to see: Owl Creek Pass, North Rim of the Black Canyon, Lizard Head Pass, Silverton.

Aspen has some beautiful areas (ie. Maroon Bells) but it'll look like downtown Paris with all the people. There may be reservations systems in place for the shuttles to and from Maroon Bells. Buy a postcard instead.

So many beautiful places to see but not all in the allotted time you have for this trip. Make the most out of what time you have.

Thanks for the insights! It never ceases to amaze me the FM community taking the time to give all these details, much appreciated.

I will have a rental vehicle so getting around is not an issue.

I like the idea of 2-3 nights in Gunnison (or Crested Butte) and 2-3 in Ridgeway. Going to skip RMNP this time and dedicate a trip just for that in the following years.

High level plan:

Sep 30th - Arrive Denver late afternoon
Oct 1 - Head out to Gunnison (or CB). Oct 2,3 in Gunnison
Oct 4- Gunnison to Ridgway. Oct 5,6 Ridgway
Oct 7 - Head back to Denver, stay somewhere TBD midway.
Oct 8 - TBD midway to 4PM flight from Denver

Any suggestions on the most scenic route from DEN to Gunnison? I don't mind a bit of extra drive or even stopping overnight somewhere before reaching Gunnison.

Be sure your rental car company will allow 'off-road' use. By this I mean on dirt or gravel roads. The road from Crested Butte over Kebler Pass, also Ohio Pass and Owl Creek Pass are gravel. By local standards these are good gravel roads and unless muddy you won't need 4-wheel drive. I've never read this an issue in Colorado but check quietly with your company. Or you can ask for a 4-wheel rental and not worry about it at all.

As far as driving from Denver to Gunnison there will be a bit of traffic and your best leaf-colored areas are going to be west of the Continental Divide. You might consider taking I-70 to Breckenridge, have lunch and walk around town for an hour and travel south over Hoosier Pass to Alma. From Alma turn west on the Buckskin Gulch road and follow the signs to the Windy Ridge Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area. I was there yesterday in my Subaru and its a pretty good gravel road. By the time of your trip there may have already been some snow on the ground (its at 12,000') so the road may not be passable. If you can get there, its worth the visit...and an easy walk from the parking lot. Here's a link: https://www.colorado.com/wildlife-viewing-refuges/windy-ridge-bristlecone-pine-scenic-area

Otherwise the rest of the drive to Gunnison (after leaving Fairplay) is kind of uneventful (by Colorado standards). If you can't make the drive to Windy Ridge you may stop in Fairplay and visit South Park City. It's a fully restored 1800's western town. Some good photo opportunities there as well.

Wherever you end up on this trip think about using it as a springboard to a return trip in future years. You won't be able to see everything you may want to so just relax and enjoy yourself. Too often visitors have a long list of places to visit and can become disappointed because they spend too much time driving between them. A gold Aspen in Crested Butte looks like a gold Aspen in Silverton. Take it easy and absorb rather than rush.

I agree about driving over Cottonwood Pass (vs. Monarch). If you do take this road please stop at the top and walk to the overlook to the east. You'll want a WA for this shot of the road as it makes a broad turn at your feet. Have a fun and safe trip.
