p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon EF 85mm f1.2 vs RF 85mm f1.2, wow!

I have owned both, and hated the EF iteration for hunting problems, and slow as hell focus. I have had the RF iteration for a day, and the difference is night and day, fast AF, minimal hunting, and to date the best Canon lens i have ever owned!

I have never owned the 1.2 lenses for EF, the mixed reviews and doubts about the usability of the 1.2 aperture stopped me from making that investment.

Now just got an R5 a few weeks ago, with it the RF 50/1.2, followed swiftly by the RF 85/1.2, and I am loving both of them. Compared to my old 5DIII, the improved auto-focus of the R5 with face and eye tracking and better accuracy make working with wide apertures much more joyful, and the image quality of both lenses is outstanding already wide open.

The EF 1.2L were greatly improved when used on the Canon R# cameras. But the RF 1.2 lenses are just ridiculous. (price, weight, and sharpness wide open).

But I must confess, I have kept my EF 50/1.2. There's still something unique about it. Perhaps because of its perfect imperfections.

The EF 50 1.2 does have its charms. But, nobody could accuse it of being clinical!

You won't see a lens like that again, from Canon.

Uber-slow AF is one thing ... the damn lens cannot focus accurately at f1.2 because of the ultra-thin DOF - so when you move even a tad as you release the shutter, your focus will be off because the AF couldn't refocus in an instant. Could also be an issue with front/back focussing, of course. When I had that EF lens I avoided shooting at f1.2 which really defeats the purpose of having an f1.2 lens. I am hoping to get the more versatile RF 50/1.2L lens at some point.

Had both the 85 f1.2 ii and the 50L and had zero problems with wide open focusing or slow focusing with the 85 f1.2 ii. Should mention these lenses are not speed-demons and I didn't use servo or lock and re-compose. Really enjoyed using both

I had the mark 1 version, and while not the fastest AF it was good enough for me. Very sharp wide open while adapted to my Z6 M1. Sold it when I switched to Sony. Found a 85mm f1.2 Mark 2 at a good price and hope it's in stated condition and just as sharp as my mark 1. This will be adapted to my Sony A9 (Mark 1).

The optics in the EF85/1.2 v2 didn't change, but apparently the coatings were improved, so theoretically should help with some of the weakness that lens has with veiling flare in backlighting. The aperture is also more rounded when stopped down vs. the original, which will help with keeping bokeh balls rounder. That's the one feature of the v2 I missed having in my v1 because I usually used it in the f/2-2.5 range where the aperture shape started to impact bokeh ball shape. I've since moved on to the EF85/1.4L IS. It's not as perfect as the RF 85L, but good enough for my needs and addresses pretty much all of the EF85/1.2L's weaknesses in a relatively affordable package. I still have the 85/1.2L v1 and should give it a try on mirrorless to see how much AF performance and accuracy improves...

I owned the EF 85 1.2 mk2, and in addition to the (slow) hunting and general focusing issues (on a 5D mk3), the manual electronic focusing was enraging to use. I went back to the 85mm 1.8, but found it insufficient in many ways, and was only happy when the 85 1.4L came out. What it lost on bokeh relative to the 1.2 it more than made up with fast AF, good manual override and IS to boot. Pity it has not been replicated in the RF lens lineup so far, I own the f:2 macro as the Rf 1.2 is too expensive for the use I have for that focal length

Agreed, however my subjects are stationary (not running from me) or move very little so the AF is ok.
