p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 'a Batis story...' - a photographic sketchbook for the summer 2022

Dear fellow FM’ers,

I’m happy to tell you that as of today I’m starting a small blog project www.batisstory.com for the summer 2022. My plan is to share summer images in this blog at least couple of times a week with small supporting narratives – and I’ve dedicated this thread on FM to share my blog posts here as well.

The main purpose of this blog is personal: it’s here to keep me active in my photography. By taking up a personal project and sharing it with others, I’m going to concentrate on summer photography and steer away from the ever intimidating ‘auto-pilot mode’. But there’s a second objective as well: by sharing ideas, thoughts and inspiration as much as I can during the journey, I hope to give something back to community as well. So, if you are into family photo documentary, there’s a lot of stuff in coming in coming weeks, with hopefully a thoughtful contemplations of ‘why’ and ‘how’ as well. In short, I hope this thread will bring some artistic and non-gear related content to the FM Sony forum.

To be fair and honest, I should also mention in the beginning that I’ll be using ZEISS Batis lenses and that because of that my summer project is supported by ZEISS. So, if you are interested in Batis lenses, that’s also one reason you might find the blog interesting. But I will be skipping the marketing discourses/lens reviews as we all know them already by now and I have a much more personal Batis story to share. So, in short again, there will be something about the Batis lenses, but hopefully with a bit different twist.

In the past, I’ve done a couple of similar projects with quite positive feedback. As some of you might remember my past projects, I warmly welcome you to follow this on too. I’m going down to rabbit hole once again and commit myself to yet another photography project.

So, without further introductions, here’s the first blog post:

Hello world

"So, this is it! I’m in an elevator on my way to summer holidays and also starting a personal photography project for the summer 2022. My plan is to share images in this microblog at least couple of times a week with small supporting narratives. As this is a sort of a sketchbook there will be snapshots, creative images and family photo documentary stuff, all which I hope to create [...]"

Thanks for the support - I'm going to need it, because there's a bit of a ad-hoc chaos when it comes to images itself..

"I think that making good images isn’t, in the end, very much a gear oriented question, but to introduce the blog in proper way I do need to mention something also about the gear. Most of you are still interested about it and after all, it’s an easy way to start the project. So, for a camera body I’ll be using a very popular third generation Sony A7III..."

I recently decided on and acquired the 40 and 85 as my go-to AF lenses, and I absolutely love them. Of course now I'm eyeing the 25

I'd be interested to follow this project, please keep posting here, or give an option to sign up for updates on the blog.

Sounds like a fun series! I'll try to follow along! I'm very happy with my Batis 40 and do sometimes eye the Batis 25

I'm also looking forward to more pictures. I really enjoy shooting with the Batis series. The Batis pictures always look very lively.

Looking forward to reading the blog posts and it's always nice to see Finnish scenery especially since I've had no chance to travel back there in the last 3 years for holidays.

I've owned Batis 18/2.8, 25/2, 85/1.8 before but currently I just keep the 135/2.8. Really liked them all optically. I'm not a big fan of the extra bulk on some of them that are larger than necessary, although they are not too heavy. Sometimes I miss the 85/1.8. 135/2.8 is a great performer and I prefer it to the bigger and heavier 135/1.8 options. It's my longest Tele lens for the native E-mount currently.

This is awesome, since I expect that not many have the full Batis kit. At some point I'll be sharing my thoughts about how kit works as a whole, so it might be interesting to hear your views as well. But like I wrote the Batis 2.8/18 and 2.8/135 are currently new to me, I'm still trying to wrap my head around them and how to use them. Being competent with the new focal lengths they offer will likely take a lot longer than this summer project, but at some point I'm going to share my thoughts about them.

Hi Dave and thanks for chiming into my project thread - always appreciating your views in other threads.

Regarding the 'extension', I've learned to perceive different focal lengths in very simple way: wide angle, standard and a tele. When I'm approaching a photo opportunity I don't think in terms of focal lengths, instead I'll try to decide if the situation calls for wide angle, standard or a tele. To me it's much more simple that way. Now, the Batis 2/25, Batis 2/40 and the Batis 1.8/85 have provided me just that. With the new (to me) lenses Batis 2.8/18 and Batis 2.8/135 I find that they offer (in my perception) either 'more wide angle' or 'more tele'. This is kind of new situation for me as I need to start decide if I need either 'super wide angle' or just 'wide angle' - or 'short tele' or 'medium tele'. So for now the new lenses work as 'an extension of my system', but I hope my perception gets more 'fine-grained' and I learn to see the subtleties these focal lengths offer..

With the three Batis lenses, the Batis 2/25 has been my most important lens because it fits so perfectly with the ideas that I have about family photo documentary stuff. It let's you get very close and within the action.

I'll be updating this thread throughout the project and right now I plan to shoot as long there is some sort of summer light in Finland..

Your work on the Batis 2/40 CF thread is one reason why wanted to start this project, so thanks for sharing your images! It's like every time I've seen your images I've thought to myself that why I don't post mine, or there's too little stuff shared from Batis lenses. So, working on it in my mind I came into idea of this summer blog.

Hi Juha and great to hear that you have a Batis as well - I've had an impression that your more into manual focus lenses. The Batis 2.8/135 is surely an interesting lens (APO and all) and I'm very excited to see what I can come up with it. Surely a something I've been eyeing for a long long time.

As for sceneries, I've kind of played on the idea that Finnish sceneries will look exotic on their own for others which might make my work easier. But now that I know that you'll be inspecting my images I'll have to try harder! We should do a two week apartment exchange, I could come to Tokyo and you could come to ... Tampere ... Hmm, not sure if that sounds exciting to you after all..

Thanks Toni! I'm into manual focus lenses too but I have a collection of AF lenses as well, and I like to shoot Japanese Summer Festival events (especially dance festivals like Awaodori, Yosakoi, Eisa etc.) with AF lenses (something I just enjoy as hobby activity). Those haven't happened in the last 3 years but they are coming back this summer so I'm getting back into it. Just used the Batis 135/2.8 last weekend in one of those events too. For general walkaround I use manual focus lenses more often but sometimes I go with AF lenses for that purpose too. For walkaround use I usually prefer my A7C and small & light primes regardless of MF or AF.

I'm also from Tampere originally, was born there and went through all schools and university (TTKK) in Tampere. Moved to Tokyo just after I graduated from university and been here ever since. When me and my wife & son travel back to Finland we always stay in my parents house (between Janka and Hakametsä). So Tampere itself is appealing but not sure about the apartment exchange thing and there's currently no plan to travel even this year as my son has limited holiday window from his university and I'm now too busy with work, also traveling from Japan to Finland has become much more complicated than it used to be (expensive and flights are now 14h instead of the old 10h, and have to do some Covid tests to qualify for coming back to Japan etc.).

Anyway, looking forward to more of your blog posts

I would really appreciate if you can include the exif data below the shots to identify the lens and settings.

Thanks!
