p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon EF 24-70 F2.8 II - Err 01

In the middle of my first Div 1 Football Shoot, I started getting Err 01. Didn't have much time, was able to flip to a Prime and got the job done. Horrible timing!!

Called Canon Help Desk, he said that Ribbon cable is damaged. $396 estimate from Canon Repair folks .. Ouch. I guess beats buying a new lens

Question : How common is this problem? Canon Repair Tech said that he has never encountered this before. Shouldn't this be considered manufacture defect and be covered?

I've done this repair twice, on a 24-105/4L IS (Mk I). If your lens is within warranty, it should be covered. After warranty, you're on your own, unless it becomes a common problem. I don't think this is a common problem.

The RF 24-70/2.8L IS 'replacement' for your lens was released in 2019. That means Canon will no longer service your lens at all, after about four years from now.

This is a very common problem. I had the same error with my EF 24-70 f/4. And when I took it in for repairs the technician said it's a common problem with the 24-105 f/4, 24-70 f/4 and the 24-70 f/2.8 lenses. I'm not sure if the RF versions have this problem.

Maybe, I should have said, 'common enough for Canon to fix it, for free'. Like the 1DIII AF issue (submirror alignments), or the great 1DX lubricant migration (you think diffraction is a problem...).
