He must be reading my posts about the 24-120 and 100-400 glad someone with some reach has seen the light about this fantastic combo for landscapes.

Always good to see more converts, but let’s see if he will stay with the system

He mentions a lot of things I also had in mind when I decided for the Z7 and against a GFX. The latter has better IQ but the weight penalty is too high.

Seems he is not entirely convinced of the 24-120mm yet when compared to the 32-64mm. I think he should maybe (also) consider the 24-70mm f2.8 which will be closer in quality to the Fuji lens.

I honestly can’t tell if he switches for views or is like me and just enjoys using and learning all sorts of gear. I’ll be curious to see the results of his first trip. He has the advantage of a great eye so he makes good images with whatever he has on him.

Having had both, imo the 24-70 f2.8 doesn’t have any appreciable advantages over the 24-70 f4 for his type of shooting - especially since he mentioned he’s trying to cut down on weight.

My usual combo is the 24-70 f4 + 100-400 and I rarely miss the 71-99mm range with the crop-ability of the Z7, either

I’m not entirely sure the 24-70 2.8 improves on the 24-120. I bet he changes his tune after the trip and has more use.

Wasn't he Canon a few short years ago? Not interested in hearing what soneone who has switched systems 3x in 3 years has to say about photography. Photography isn't about the gear. His images are pleasing to look at but lack a distinctive style. This feels like a ploy to generate chatter... which this thread shows is perhaps going to be a successful ploy

The lenstip reviews say it does I own the 24-70mm f4 and have rented the 2.8 and would also say it is a step up even if the f4 is no slouch.

The 24-120 should be in line with the 24-70 f4 based on the reviews I‘ve seen. Never tried it myself though.

He shot Canon for ages. Not really a gear-centric channel at all. I think his relatively quick switch back to FF is because the move to GFX was basically a mistake. Quite clear from his reasoning in the video above even though he doesn’t call it a mistake

Both should be very good. In Cameralab's review the Z 24-120/4 was found to be very sharp. At around f5.6-8 it looks excellent at all focal lengths, also sharp at corners.

I guess everyone has a different view... I shoot professionally with the GFX100s and the Z9. For fast moving type shoots I use the Z9, for everything else I prefer the GFX100s.

A mistake you say? A few thousand euros/pounds here and there mistake? Now that’s funny. Sounds more like business being done and that is about gear. Oh, the drama!

This is my future.. though not the GFX100...
I'm currently all Z/F, but hope to add the GFX 50R (or S), 32-64 & 120 macro for everything but wildlife. My Z9 and 500PF ticks about 90% of my wildlife shooting needs. While the Z6ii isn't necessarily a landscape camera, I use it and the 100-400 for that use. Switching out my non-wildlife kit for the Fuji would offer me an experience I have not had since 2002 when I spent years shooting with Pentax 645 AF bodies.

Well, YouTube is his job so I‘m sure he’ll take the views. But if you were a regular viewer of his channel you would know that you’re not doing him justice with your comments

Also, the impact probably isn’t so bad if he sells the GFX. If I remember correctly he bought the 50R when it was on some super steep discount, definitely below 3k GBP.

And yes, a mistake. With photography gear it’s very easy to convince yourself that you „need“ certain gear or that it would be the best thing ever for your photography, or that the weight won’t be that big of a deal, etc. There’s not really a way of knowing before using the stuff for some time.

I'm a bit sad, I liked him using GFX.

But a photographers gear is their perogative to chose.

Heaton is an excellent landscape photographer, he doesnt do gear reviews or when he does them they're not very good, and he also occasionally uses film.

Bruce,
before digital all of my commercial work was done with the Pentax 6x7. I prefer the 645 format over the 35mm format for composition, always have. Even in my film days, 35mm was only used for fast paced shooting.
Before the GFX most of my commercial work was done with the Pentax 645z.
I think you will end up really enjoying the GFX.
I love the fact that I can use some really good Canon EF glass on the GFX and the same glass works just as well on my
Z9 with the Fringer adapter.
In the end they are just tools and I try to use whatever fits me the best for any given photoshoot.

I think the clickbait criticisms for Thom are overblown...he's never had a "gear" channel, and only finally started experimenting outside of Canon a few years ago. Ever since, he's on a quest for the best IQ to weight package he can find for backpacking (that sounds familiar). He dabbled in X mount for a time with the X-T4 but found it lacking as most do for landscape, so he jumped right up to GFX.

I've changed kits in that quest more than he has in the same time, and I wasn't even getting paid to talk about

I have more respect for FMers time than to post blatant gear swapping bait. I also wouldn't link to someone who doesn't have actual photography skills (cough TONY cough).

Not really a gear-centric channel at all

I know it seems impossible, but you don't have to respond to things you have no idea about.

I have watched Thom for many years. His channel, first and foremost, is about the process of creating images, the internal struggles many photographers face when trying to creating art that means something to them, and occasionally, how gear can play into that.

This is the part where you post a random picture with no context that doesn't advance the conversation of the thread at all, so go ahead.

I know better about this stuff than you think.

You think? The pictures are random but not so much. there is more info there then what you think. This is an issue with some who never ask a question always know the answer.
