p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S vs AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm F2.8G ED?

I recently acquired a Z7 with the 24-70 f/4 S lens and I am very happy with the difference in size and weight from the
D810 + 24-70 f/2.8 that was my go to camera / lens combo for over a decade.

Next, I would like to add the 14-24 S f/2.8 but so far haven't found one in my price range

There are plenty of great deals out there for the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm F2.8G ED version

Since I already have the FTZ ll, I'm wondering how other members who have tried it feel about the Z version of the 14-24 vs the older DSLR version on the Z7?

Optical performance and handling?

Thanks.

Do you need the f2.8? I would absolutely buy the Z lens over the f-mount at this point unless:

1. Cost is the key point
2. A 14-24 is not going to be used as often
3. You need f2.8 for astro or other
4. You don't mind large filter kits

If you don't need the f2.8, the 14-30 will give you every bit as good of an image or better than the f-mount but with a smaller, lighter lens and the opportunity to use 82mm screw on / magnetic filters. The cost for a used 14-30 probably isn't too far off of the older 14-24 also.

If you need f2.8 and this lens will be an important part of your photography, saving up for the 14-24 f2.8S will give you the best of the best. Better corner and edge sharpness vs the 14-30 and 14-24 f-mount. Less vignetting. Internal zoom which is nice vs the 14-30. It's also lightweight overall. However, those advantages may seem small to most who don't need f2.8. The filters and hood for the filters definitely adds to the size of the kit....the only downside other than cost with the 14-24mm f2.8S in my opinion.

I'd rather have the Sigma Art 14-24 over the 14-24 2.8 G, but I'd rather have the Z Mount 14-24 all day as that beats out both of the F mounts. Agreed with Urban, the F4 is stellar, quite close in IQ.

Second that with the Sigma if buying f-mount. That's a fantastic lens which I owned prior to switching to the Z-mount lenses. Really nice astro lens.....but heavy.

The 14-24mm f/2.8 S takes 112 mm filters and is optically almost completely even across the frame. It's certainly worth the money.

With B+W polarization filter.

How badly do you need F2.8? If you can do without, the Z 14-30/4 is better optically than the F-mount 14-24/2.8, takes screw-on filters, and is extremely compact.

If you need F2.8 and want the best possible quality then the Z 14-24/2.8 is as good as it gets. It's expensive, heavy, and annoying to use filters with but that is the case with pretty much all flagship UWAs.

I went with the 14-30/4 and I love it. It's so compact and easy to pack (way smaller than the 16-35VR it replaces), and you are already ahead of most if not all F mount UWAs in the IQ department. That being said I never require F2.8 on the wide end and almost always am at F8-11, so YMMV.

The 14-30mm f/4 is also very much worth the money. Some further observations on the 14-24mm f/2.8 S:

1. With a wide angle, you probably rarely need f/2.8. f/1.4 makes a difference, but f/2.8 most often does not. But the f/2.8 maximum aperture reduces vignetting at f/4 and f/5.6.

2. Don't buy the 14-24mm f/2.8 because of the aperture, but because of its optical quality.

3. It's large, but not heavy. In fact, it is surprisingly lightweight.

4. Using filters on the 14-24mm f/2.8 is not annoying, but paying for 112 mm filters may well be.

The 14-24 f2.8G was the envy of the industry for many years. I know people who switched to Nikon for that lens. As far as I know the performance of my example hasn't deteriorated since I bought it. I see them listed for sale in the forum here for $800 or less. I have no doubt the new S version is superior but nothing you could tell in real photos.

For the most part one can't disagree with you......but the experience with filters is different for sure. Especially vs the 14-30.

This is a great time for people who have been waiting for great f-mount lenses though.

It is not just about f2.8. The 14-24 has far far better sunstars if the OP cares, and in my experience is more flare resistant than the 14-30/4 Z. It is also far more flare resistant than the 14-24 F. Size wise it feels a lot more compact than the 14-24, does not require gargantuan filter adapters, and fits far better in a bag. I would say keep looking unless you need it now... as long as your search parameters are realistic.

The Z1430 is a killer lens, a great choice if you don't need f/2.8. I have shot both the 1430 and Z1424 and feel the f/2.8 lens does have an edge in several ways (lower vignetting, sharpness well away from center, contrast, color saturation, flare resistance, point light stars) but it comes at a cost.

If you are considering F mount glass, I would recommend the Sigma 1424 over the Nikon 1424G.

Last year, I traded in my 14-24 g for 14-30,and I am more impressed with this lens than not. Although 14-24 was a great lens, I always struggled with the focus shift and field curvature. I also suspect my copy was a bit decentered. Leading to unexpected results especially for landscape use. I still loved it for reportage type of shooting and Z6 definitely gave a new life with its reliable focusing With D810, I ended up using trusty Zeis 21/2.8. So from my experience, I would rather go with 14-24S or 14-30 unless DSLR is also part of your flow.

The 14-24 2.8 G is a 15 year old lens design. Not an indictment, but it is no surprise to me other lenses are rated higher these days. My next Z lens will probably be the 14-30.
