There will be a 70-300 for Z mount. Nikon doesn’t want to hinder sales of the 100-400, but after that lens has been on the market for a while and has sold enough copies, we’ll get the announcement about the 70-300.

I have the Af-p f-mount lens, which is a great lens, especially considering that I got it for $400 brand new. But I find the adapter to be clunky and awkward and I look forward to the day that I can retire it.

I tend to like the 75-300 type zooms, often quite a bit. Even the $175 Tamron 75-300 I got in 2005 quite good up to ~200mm. The size isn't so bad that you can't use these like 70-200. Plus you have up to 300mm if you are interested.

70-300Z equivalent of the AFP and I'll preorder. I am thinking along the same lines as a previous poster that said Nikon will likely wait awhile to maximize profits from the 100-400Z. In addition, the supply chain is likely a constraining factor as to how many lenses they can put out quickly, so going for the higher profit lenses makes sense.

For now, FTZ and 70-300AFP will have to do. Since it's the only F lens I carry for trips why I need to fly and limit lenses that I take with me, at least the FTZ stays glued on the 70-300, removing one point of aggravation.

The 70-300 is shown on Thom Hogan's guide to Nikon Patented lenses

BUT - since it is NOT shown in Bold Italic, TH does not consider the lens is likely to see production.

I'm new to the Z's, having bought used Z5 and Z7's in the last six weeks. The very light weight of the Z's vis-á-vis my DSLR's make them very handy to use. The Z5 came with a "kit" 24-50, and the Z7 none at all. I have a large existing array of F-mounts which are very usable by way of the FTZ adapter.

I previously owned a couple of 70-300's, but sold them in favor of lowering my lens inventory, but this week opted to get another 70-300 just to use with the Z's. The price of the G model is very competitive. It really balances nicely.

I wouldn't be surprised, at all, if Nikon brought out a 70-300 in the Z mount in the near future.

Personally, I don't think that's the case.

Not many people, if any, are cross shopping ~$600 entry-level lenses and $2,700 high-end lenses, not to mention the quite significant size/weight difference. Using what's currently available as an estimate, it's over twice the weight and over four times the price.

Also, if we look at what Nikon has done historically in the F mount, they put out more 70-300's than almost any other zoom, right alongside their 100-400's. They even bothered to make DX versions of the 70-300 which is saying something haha.

I suspect it has more to do with prioritizing production capacity in an environment currently very much constrained by supply and labor issues. They might be prioritizing the higher margin lenses while demand is still extremely high, but I don't think it has anything to do with a worry that 70-300 sales would take away a meaningful amount of 100-400 sales. They seem to be selling every one they can make anyway.

My very scientifical like photo test. Nikon Z7 and 70-300 AF-P DX VR ;ens test, handheld. Given my shakey quakey hands, I am quite impressed.

The 70-300 AF-P is a gem. It's price/performance ratio is off the charts. It's my go-to travel zoom and I have no desire to replace it until Nikon releases the Z equivalent.

I doubt that Nikon is worried about a 75-300mm hurting sales of the 100mm-400mm. They are two entirely different beasts at two widely different price points. I think that the lack of a 75-300mm is more likely due to limited manufacturing capacity and or supply chain problems. Many shooters would probably own both for a variety of reasons. I believe Nikon wants to make more
profitable lenses for the pro market their priority, in order to compete with Sony and Canon. They obviously can't make every
thing at once!

The Nikon roadmap has 6 more lenses beyond the 31 already "released" for a total of 37. Nikon has promised at least 50 lenses by the end of 2023, IIRC. So there's about 13 lenses we know nothing about yet. So maybe it will be there....or maybe not.
