Hi everyone, I shoot mostly motorsports and I am looking to buy a 400mm f2.8. I use a 1DX mkii but eventually will go mirrorless in 2-3 years. My main concern though is if there is any big enough performance difference between the 400mm f2.8 mark ii vs the mark iii to justify the huge price difference. My options are to buy a 2nd hand 400mm f2.8 mark ii or buy a brand new 400mm f2.8 mark iii (even if 2nd, the price difference is relatively small, might as well get brand new locally). It’s a big investment either way, I could really use some help and input. Thank you!

Weight is the biggest reason, and maybe the use with the 2.0TC, otherwise the old lens is just as sharp. For motorsports, I can't see the benefit, unless you're using it hand held.

I sold my 400 2.8 II to a professional motorsports photographer and he bought it because of the weight.

Even older ones are supposed to be good optically but the v3 is the lightest. But I think the weight is less on the v2 even vs 14lbs or something for the early non IS

400II is optically reputed to be equal to, or slightly better than, the 400III. I have a 200-400mm of similar weight profile to the 400II and it is very manageable. Save the $7k difference and pick up an R3 with the change, imho. Good luck with your search!

All thanks to Canon, that they made a MKIII version!
I used them all as a motorsports photographer, but I'm so happy with the weight decrease of the MKIII.
If you are working a day on a circuit, to carry out all stuff body's and lenses, then you to value this weight.
enjoy! I love that lens. Best ever made!

The MarkIII is a featherweight compared to the OG 400mm IS Mark 1. I believe the Mark III also had a new coating on the elements that helped with flare, but don't quote me.

Not only lighter, many of the elements are relocated closer to the camera body so the load on your arms is significantly less. Same for the 600mm MkIII.
