I went hiking in the eastern Columbia River Gorge last weekend and came across a Northern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus). The rattlesnake was about 3 feet long.

Great set. I especially like the one with fangs showing. Glad you were shooting at 200 rather than 70…

If I came across this rattler while hiking, I would not be standing there taking photos. Having been bitten by a garter snake, I want noting to do with snakes.

You did a great job with these Stephen and the second with the blue tong sticking out is my favorite.

Thank you. No fangs here, I did get one photo with the forked tongue out though. I am glad I did not have the 28-70mm lens on instead.

Thank you Alan. The olive coloring really allowed it to blend into the surroundings under the oak forest here.

Thank you Morris. This is the second Northern Pacific rattlesnake I have encountered in the last 17 years. The other was on the side of a gravel road.

Very nice shots. I would have needed a 600mm lens

That's what I meant, not fangs!

Beautiful shots of a beautiful snake. It is definitely ready to strike so it's good you didn't try to get closer.
Cheers,
Brent

Thank you.
The shade allowed me to capture the colors without washing them out.

Thank you Brent. This one only rattled for 20-30 seconds, then just posed with their best angry face before slithering away.

Thank you.

"The color pattern of the typical form, C. o. oreganus, has a dark-brown, dark-gray, olive-brown, or sometimes black or pale yellowish ground color overlaid dorsally with a series of large, dark blotches with uneven white edges."

Thank you. It is quite rare to see rattlesnakes in the wild in Oregon.
