Some huge discounts on the 400 f/4.5 in Australia currently and thinking of selling the 500 PF. I'm not concerned with the IQ of the 400 + 1.4x combo, but what's the consensus on AF speed of this combo vs 500 PF +FTZ II on the Z9? Any tangible difference? Would like to think native Z mount glass will perform better.

BTW I don't own the 100-400 and won't be purchasing it. Just wish Nikon gave us 500 f/4.5 or 600 f/5.6.

I had both the 500PF and 400 f4.5 at the same time and I preferred the 400 f4.5 w/ and w/out the 1.4x to the 500PF. The time it takes to lock on to a subject felt noticeably quicker with the 400mm lens. The two other benefits (other than the FTZ thing) are the "in-focus" keeper rate and quieter VR. With the 500PF in AFC 3D animal AF, a burst would result in focused images w/ a smaller percentage being "ultra" sharp or consistently sharp. The 400 f4.5 produces a higher number of critically sharp images per burst.

In addition, I have found the 400 f4.5 to be usable with the 2x... I have produced a number of images that are far better than they should be w a 2x... so, if you are wanting an 800PF, but can't find one or afford one, the 400 f4.5 + 2x is a viable option.

BTW, I have sold my 500PF, and am now using a 400 f4.5 and 800PF. I returned my converters (within the return period) to reduce my 800PF expenditure, which arrived months earlier than expected. I will buy the Z 1.4x again, once I recover from the exorbitant expense of the 800mm PF.

regards,
bruce

The combo Z 400/4.5 + Z TC 2.0x is quite usable on the 46 Mpix of the Z9:

It dawned on me, that in essence, the Z400mm f4.5 with 1.4tc can be seen as a direct existing counterpart to the Olympus 150-400mm f4.5, if you are mostly only using that lens at 200-400mm, and save for the difference between 1.25tc and 1.4tc.

Optically, they both seem to be brilliant. The Nikon has the advantage of being smaller and less than half the price, the Olympus has the advantage of having a much lighter flagship body that costs a little over 1/3 of the Nikon.

It would be a compelling comparison between the Z9/400f4.5 and the Olympus OM1/150-400f4.5
The Olympus may appear to have the advantage of zoom, but the Z9 has 4x the sensor area, so can "zoom out" by a factor 2, which essentially makes the Z400mm a Z200-400mm f4. 5 lens, near identical to the Olympus 150-400mm.

Certainly when a 80mp Nikon Z body were to arrive, it would be a véry similar set-up

Dreadful weather here today - rain pouring all day long & snow melting pretty rapidly (local streets look like small creeks). I heard the robin call from the tree outside my balcony - he doesn't look very impressed with it all.

1/60s, bare lens.

Merry Xmas.

Nice one Luke, I like how punchy colours, and background rendering that lens produces, even with flat lighting.

Synchro VR is also great. 400mm at 1/60s. I probably could have gone even slower.

You should be able for that kind of subject, z7II doesn't have it, and I'm not concerned to go that slow, the lens VR alone works like charm.

Hi Bruice, thank you very much for the detailed reply and what I was hoping to hear. I also find the 500 PF seems a bit slow to lock and would also have a healthy % of not quite sharp shots in a burst.

For now I've just ordered the 1.4x as these things are quite expensive in Australia, going for $999 normally. Best price I could find on the 1.4x was $849.

I am pondering the 800 PF, but am in no hurry. I would love to see a 600 f/5.6 or even better a 500 f/4.5 with built-in 1.4x TC. I would be more than happy with 700 f/6.3 at the flick of a switch and having a full stop faster than the 800 for lower light. I know that will never happen, but one can dream. I'll never be able to afford the 600 f/4 being $27K in Australia, while the 800 is readily found for $9.5K.

Anyway, 400 and 1.4x should be here by the 9th Jan at the latest.

Cheers and Merry Xmas everyone.

Loving this lens with the 1.4x teleconverter. Will be nice to take out and shoot with it some more, haven't had a real chance of giving it full workout other than taking shots off the back deck. Happy Holiday's everyone!

The 400 f4.5 is a such a great lens... love it's mix of size and optical clarity. Nikon has a winner here.

The Z400 has great contrast and color, that was obvious from day one of people posting images taken with the lens.
Now that you also have the 800PF, do you see this as an ideal two lens set-up?

My camera store contacted me and said they received info from Nikon that current estimated delivery time for the 800PF here is 4 weeks. I am fairly high now on the list, so it's getting near. I used the D500+500PF for over two years and did not feel I had too much reach, so I would assume the the Z9+800PF will be enough to fill my needs, but that Z400+1.4TC is very tempting as a second lens.

The 400/4.5, 800/6.3 and 1.4x is also my target kit. Just waiting on the 800mm but those three make a very light and capable kit as long as the light is sufficient.

Yours is a good question and one that I have asked myself before and after purchasing the 800PF. Were my pockets deeper, the 400mm f2.8S lens with built in 1.4x would be the "one" telephoto for my shooting preferences. However, the price of the 400mm f2.8S or 600mm f4S are a step beyond my comfort zone. Ideally, I'd prefer a 200-600mm f4.5 (or 5.6) S-series lens, but this is not what Nikon is planning to produce. All of the roadmaps suggest that the 200-600 will be more like the 200-500 F-mount lens than the 200-400mm f4.0 professional optics.
Given the choices in the Z-System, the 400mm f4.5 and 800 f6.3PF seem to be the perfect compromise solution. The 800PF is a marvel in optical engineering. The lens is light, sharp, and relatively easy to shoot. While slower to lock on than the 400 f4.5, the lens plays well with the Z9 and creates photographic opportunities that a shorter focal length can't offer.
While I wouldn't call the 400/800 the "perfect combo," I find that the lenses pair well and are portable enough to carry in one bag.

If you liked the long-eared owl shot posted here, you should check out the pictures I recently posted on the 800PF thread.

regards,
bruce

Yes, I saw your very nice long eared owl images taken with the 800PF. What I like about the lens, is that you have the reach without needing a TC, without having to put up with an extremely large size and without having to carry a hefty weight. It is straight and simple and gets you close, and delivers prime quality.

I believe the consensus is that it is a clear step below the Sony 600GM regarding image quality, rendering flatter images and lacking the ultimate contrast and clarity of the 600/4 lenses, but it is clearly still a high quality prime lens. And the AF is allegedly a step below. For me, choosing between the Nikon 800PF and the Sony 600GM is nearly identical to the choice between the 500PF and a 500/4 lens: do I want the ultimate clarity and IQ, and top level auto focus, but with the price of large size and weight, and a hefty cost, or do I want very good prime IQ a step below the top-level lenses, but have the substantial weight and size advantage and half the price? I have decided to choose the latter option.
