p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Selling my 200 f1.8 ef - what would be a good replacement for an R system?

Well I've finally made the decision to switch to an R system. I just listed my 200 f1.8 on ebay and will shortly be listing several other lenses. Now the big question is what R lens can I use to replace it with. I used it primarily for the awesome bokeh I could get when shooting 10-15ft from my subject. I could probably go a little shorter or longer. . .

I have no experience with the R lenses so any advice would be appreciated.

Sigma 135 ART
Sigma 105 ART
Canon RF 85 1.2

I've owned all of the above and end up using my cheap Canon 135/2

There should be a RF 200/2 released in the coming months (or year) by Canon. But the Sigma 105/1,4 is a great bokeh monster until you find something better.

Rumor says Canon is announcing an RF 135mm F/1.8 October of this year.

70-200 2.8 would be a possible replacement as well. Everything else you're looking at is an EF mount. So maybe keep the 200 for a while?

If true that lens will be amazing, but I wish they would just make an updated 135/2 and keep it small and lightweight.

In my experience, the new RF 70-200/2.8 has a very similar look to the 200/2, that I almost never use anymore. Obviously it's a stop slower and everything that comes with it, but the rendering is very similar.

Keep the 200/1.8 and try it on the R camera. Eye AF makes it a whole lot more useable and the IBIS is helpful.

Otherwise I’d get the 70-200/2.8 or 85/1.2. Both are wonderful lenses, and particularly the 85 is an exceptionally good lens.

Keep it. It's a special lens.

The Sigma 105mm f1.4 is a beauty.

I sold mine long go and replaced it with a 200 f/2 IS. But now that there are cameras with IBIS and on-sensor focus that would give it new life, I rather wish I had kept it. It's a bona fide classic.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

As far as keeping it goes, that's pretty much a non-starter. It's just too heavy for me at this point. I used to enjoy just walking around various fairs, shows and other public gatherings with it to take hand held candids. Not so much anymore.

When it goes off on Ebay on Wednesday I'll use the funds toward a new R3. Then I can test my current stock of EF lenses and decide which ones to keep or replace.

I appreciate all the input!

I sold my 200/1.8L five or six years ago. It wasn't easy, but I'm more happy now that I did, than otherwise.

Good luck.

I had two 200 1.8L's simultaneously back in the late 90's. Picked up the second one in mint condition from a Canon rep in Denver for $1700 and quickly flipped it for some Leica M gear. The lens is brilliant but top heavy.

Reminds of the old adage - The two happiest days in a man's life are they days he buys and then finally sells his 911. I still have both the 200 1.8 and the 911, and while I'm not quite ready to get rid of either, I'm getting closer on both. One is worth about what I paid for it and one is worth considerably more.

I don't really understand people recommending shorter lenses to replace the 200mm. I mean, no matter how good a Sigma 105 or 135 is, neither comes close when what you need is 200mm. The only lens that truly comes close is the 200mm f/2 and the big advantages of that are size, weight, balance, stabilization, and the biggest one of all - serviceability. I'd say, get one while you still can and don't worry about whether Canon will ever make an RF version. The EF can be used on more cameras including working very well on the Fuji GFX cameras and you can get it now.

For practicality, nothing beats the 70-200 2.8, and in most cases, as has been previously mentioned, that is a great replacement, except, y'know, when you actually need that extra stop.
