p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Removeable Eyecup for Canon R6?

Hi,

Does anyone know if the eyecup on the R6 is user removable?

If so are there any aftermarket eyecups that fit the R6?

I look at the Hoodman website and they don't list the R6 (or R5) as "compatible" with any of their eyecups.

Perhaps someone can point me to another manufacturer/source of info re this matter.

My objective is basically to block stray light out of the EVF when composing in bright sunlight/glare.

Thank You

It is removable with a very small Phillips screwdriver. There are no Hoodman style eye cups on the market that I know of. That is the one thing I miss from the 5D3.

Well the fact that the eyecup is removable is a start. Perhaps a 3rd party manufacturer will take notice.

I suspect someone skilled in using these 3d printers could fashion a home made one.

Thank you Mike_5D

btw I found an eyecup online listed as being for the R6 but the picture looked like it was for a DSLR. It was cheap and had a money back guarantee so I took a chance. As expected, it was NOT for an R6. So if you come across this in your search, don't bother.

I think the biggest problem may be the warranty. Removing the screws may create an issue with the warranty being voided out.

I found this Youtube on wrapping a rubber ring around the eyecup to extend it out further. He cut up a rubber glove. Maybe you can find something a little stiffer to use. Start viewing at 5 minutes in.

Interesting idea. If I could get another copy of the OEM eye cup, I'd be tempted to cut up the soft part of a Hoodman eyecup to fit over the OEM eye cup, then glue it. What's that stuff that basically melts rubber so it can bond to another piece of rubber? I've used it to patch bicycle tubes.

Just call up Canon and they will order it for you. IIRC, its about $20 plus shipping (about $10).

You cannot void the warranty by removing the screws. That would be like GM voiding a vehicle warranty because you removed the door panel to service a speaker or window.

You can pop the seal on your products if you like, but for everyone else, they should know most manufacturers frown upon that. If you can confirm Canon is okay with it, cool, but when I ordered the new eye cup, they did mention it to me that it was unclear if the warranty would be affected. I choose not to worry about it because I was at the end of the warranty anyway.

BTW, in your example, do you think GM would warranty a speaker that had clearly been removed and reinstalled (potentially incorrectly)? I don't think so, personally. Most manufacturers are clear to say they warranty their product and their installation, not untrained/certified third parties. To your point, some things may be within a manufacturer's scope to allow unauthorized maintenance such as, oil changes, filter replacements, etc., but many electronics manufacturers draw a red line when you crack their products open.

Removing the eye cup is hardly "cracking it open".

I kinda figured by now there would be at least something on the aftermarket for replacement options. Must just not be enough demand.

JJC makes several models of eyecups to fit many cameras, but I didn't see one specifically listed for your camera. It might be worth asking them if they have one to fit your camera.

For my Canon 77D and 80D models, I have their EC-7 model, which is teardrop shaped and fits my eye socket very well to block stray light. I don't even know where the original eyecups are any more. The rubber part also rotates to allow portrait or landscape orientation of the camera. I bought mine through Amazon for about $10 each.

Here's a longer/deeper eye cup for R5, R6 on Aliexpress. I've not tried it.

I got mine for today. I did some quick side by side tests in the back yard with the late afternoon sun low and to my right, which is one of the worst situations I encounter with the OEM eye cup. The extend eye cup seems to help, but I'll know more after actually shooting with it for real. I usually wear glasses so I'd still prefer the larger teardrop shaped Hoodman eye cup (if it existed for the R6), but this should be better than the stock one. If you don't wear glasses, you'll see a bigger improvement. The rubber is soft and flexible so jamming it into my eyebrow was comfortable enough. With just a small turn of my head for nose clearance, I can get a nearly light-tight seal around my eye with this eye cup.
