For your indoor sports work the 135 GM would be my first choice. Especially if you have some flexibility in your positioning.

Why do you feel the black 135 is not more discreet than the white 70-200? The only reason I considered keeping my 135 was because of its relatively small size and discreteness compared to the white zoom. Of course the 135's hood is almost as big as the lens. So it depends on your circumstances too.

@jeffbuzz

I AGREE with you, I miss-phrased that statement.
Fixed, thank you!
Cheers

I bought the 70-200 GM II and the samyang 135 this week. Not had time to play with them enough in order to comment whether I made the right decision or not.
The 70-200 is more than enough for action and I couldn’t justify paying for the GM just for portraits, for which the samyang can do the same as good if not better (some reviews report smoother bokeh).
Maybe an option for you if you can’t justify the cost of the 135 GM.

Exact same combo and reasoning for me too. So far the right choice for my use case(s)

My 2 cents: the moment I purchased the 70-200GM II I stopped using my 135GM for good.
The zoom is that good.
I shoot a lot of indoor sports (volleyball) and surely 135GM was offering lower ISO shots for the same shutter speed, but ironically focus was so much more difficult to nail due to its very shallow depth of field.
I do not shoot portraits at all, so cannot comment on that genre.

I’ve owned several top notch 135’s over the years and always ended up selling them from non use. It’s just not a prime that fits the images I like to take.

The new 70-200GM II on the other hand will never leave my possession. It’s so good and so useful for so many things and so comfortable to shoot I count myself lucky to own it. For portraits it just rocks. Last night my wife and I were on a short hike and as the sun was setting the light was just right for a quick portrait. Nothing fancy, but I love the look of this lens. No need for a fast 135 for me.

GM 135/1.8 is my favourite prime (I have them all save GM 100/2.8).If I were to sell all but one GM prime it would have been 135/1.8.I use it mostly for floral closeups and for landscapes, when I go to visit well known locations.

GM 70-200/2.8 Mk2 is superb and serves as a general purpose fast tele zoom for anything from travel, landscapes, street and closeups to architectural details. It is much more flexible, but does not have this magic combination of 135mm/f1.8/bokeh,critical for flower shots in my case.135GM also renders a little bit more "plastic" pictures compared to zoom, which rendering is more "flat".That is why I keep them both.

Took Samy 135mm for walk earlier today. Have not used 85mm+ lenses in years. Realized how limiting this fixed FL is.
If you have this dilemma - definitely go with 70-200. You would know for sure if you need 135mm.

I agree with mudlake. There is something special about the 70-200; gets me excited to use it. I planned on selling the lens when i first bought it after I moved, but I dont think i can ever sell it to be honest. Just need a TC to go with it now (and my 200-600)

Changing lenses i dont like to do. AT ALL. I might buy another body at some point
