p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM users - how often do you shoot below f/4?

I am thinking about swapping the Sony 16-35 GM for the new Sony 16-35 f/4 PZ, mainly for the savings in weight and size. The PZ is 353 grams, and the GM is 680 grams, a 327 gram difference. I looked back through my images made with the GM, and I was almost always at f/4 or above. From early reviews, it seems that the PZ holds its own as far as IQ and handles beautifully.

So…

How often do you use your 16-35 GM wide open?
What are the typical use cases for shooting the GM wide open?
Do you think that the PZ has, for all intents and purposes, IQ as good as the GM at f/4 and above?

Thanks in advance…

1635GM has two main advantages:

1. Professional event shooting in low light situations (wedding dance halls, concerts, etc.);

2. Astrophotography.

This review might be helpful in comparison of sharpness and so on:

I haven't used these, but, as mentioned above, it depends on what you are doing. Events came to mind even before reading the post above

I'd probably use it for hh landscape, if it's good enough at 2.8, around and after sunset. But I'd probably get the f/4 due to cost and possibly weight. 353g 12oz sounds appealing

I think that I will hold on to my 16-35/2.8 GM for its overall IQ and low-light capabilities. The pull to try the new Sony lenses is always so strong...

The first thing I tested when I got my 16-35/2.8 GM was checking the sharpness at 35mm at f/2.8 and it is darn respectable on my copy in the midfield - not sure about the corners. The other focal lengths on that lens, I will stop down, but I want f2.8 at 35mm to be very good and it is for me. Versatility for shooting in cities.

50% of the time at weddings, whenever I need FL < 20mm.

Seems to me the real question is "How often do YOU shoot below f/4?"

What an empty and condescending response. Why are you even a member of a gear forum where users ask other users for advice and tips? Your response isn't helpful. If you have nothing of value to say, just move on...

I don't need to shoot fast paced weddings or events so I never really needed to shoot below f4.
If I did I probably would use a prime but that's just me. I mostly use the 16-35 range for a walk around and landscape lens and shoot around f5.6 and up. The new 16-35pz fills this spot nicely for me.

To answer your question,

This school photographer (somewhat amateur although I am paid by my school to teach which allows me to support both my hobbies, history and photography ) shoot at below f4 16% of the time with the BM 16-35 so far this year according to metadata. Those exposures were mainly single subject indoor exposures.

That being said, there is not a single one of those that would have not been possible with f4 and more ISO. But it is a nice luxury to have.

I've only shot my 16-35 GM wide open, I shoot weddings so a lot of dark places, I would never even consider a f4 lens since I shoot so many dark places, I don't think you can tell the difference on the IQ side.

I do not own the 16-35GM but I do have the 16-35/2.8L which the same shooting experience pretty much

To preface the comments below, a wide angle is a more “acceptable” lens to run f/4 on, because you don’t need particularly high shutter speeds between the 16 and 35mm focal lengths.

That means, for budget reasons if I had to choose between a 16-35/4 + 70-200/2.8 or a 16-35/2.8 + 70-200/4, I would choose the former combination

However, if you do have the 16-35/2.8, I would expect 2.8 to be used fairly often.

Since at 16/2.8 there is plenty of depth of field for even single row group photos, whenever your iso is above 100, it’s mostly optimal to stop down to f2.8, since the depth of field situation is still quite acceptable in most situations

Something else to be considered is that the 14GM is lighter, 1.33 stops brighter, and if you crop it’s equivalent to a 21/2.5 or 24/2.8! (That is, it’s brighter than 2.8 below 24mm).

The less than perfect MTF of wide angle lenses in general means that this kind of cropping degrades image quality less than usual!

Therefore, if you are also running some other 24-70/2.8 kind of lens, the 14GM cannot be ignored

I’m going through the same dilemma, and I think I’m holding onto my 16-35GM as well for now. In addition to the 16-35 PZ, I’ve thought about the Sigma 16-28/Tamron 17-28 lenses, but 35 is my favorite focal length, so having 35 makes for fewer lens changes for me.

Also, IMO (with absolutely no inside information), given the releases of the 24-70 GM II and 70-200 GMII lenses, I expect to see a 16-35 GM II released in 2023 with an aperture ring and a 20-30% weight savings from v1, which would put it at 550 grams or less. One can dream…

Hopefully OSS too for video purposes

The 15-35/2.8 IS on the canon side looks very sweet for video

Why is that reply empty and condescending? You also told me that in your other thread.
I don't understand why you get so defensive.

To me @galenapass' reply makes a lot of sense.
You have the 16-35 GM so why not filter your photo library to see how often you've shot that lens wide open? It's about your shooting style/habids. That way you can perfectly see if selling it for the new 16-35 F4 would be an issue.

It's just like when someone wants to buy a prime and gets told to use his zoom lens for a while to see which focal length gets the most use. Nothing condescending about such advice.

I don't think we see the 16-35/II in 23; but perhaps in 24. They just released the 16-35/4 PZ and before that - but still fairly recently - the 12-24/GM and the 14/1.8 GM. The 16-35/GM is still competitive with the other 15/16-35/2.8s out there - if not better - so I assume they will give these other lenses a bit more space and focus on other updates. The 85/1.2, the 24-240, a new macro. Just my two cents based on nothing at all but my opinion

@smpetty If you're a lightroom user, may I suggest the “Data Plot” Lightroom Plugin. I find this extremely useful in answering the exact question @galenapass posed. Since you already own the lens you have a dataset to crunch. In my case, I use f/2.8 and f/8 about equally in this focal length. I use the fast aperture for close in action shots and f/8 for landscape type stuff.

Basically whenever I need it which is quite often. My copy performs very well at all focal lengths at 2.8
