p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Outer Banks of North Carolina - Wild Mustangs

Last week, I was able to spend a day on the islands of the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina. Corolla Beach on Currituck Island is home to several wild mustangs. These horses are the remnants of a herd that was brought over by the Spanish in the 1500's. Once numbering in the thousands, I think there are about 120 left. In order to find the horses, you must have a 4wd drive vehicle and actually drive out onto the beach. This is my 3rd time to visit. The first time, I just found a few horses grazing and walking along the surf. The second time, I didn't see any at all. This time, I think I saw a total of 20-25 horses. The thing that made it so cool this time is that it's mating season, and the stallions were duking it out for the mares! Very, very cool experience.

Very nice - so different from the ponies on Assateague Island!

Nice pics. I really like the background with the horses being the focal point. Just gives it a unique look.

Excellent images Wes at such a nice location. Seeing these in the sand against the surf sure makes these stand out beauties. Great detail and colors, nice shooting.

Fantastic, if you were shooting with a 70-200 they must be accustomed to people? How are you liking the Z9 - it seems like you are putting it to great use.

Thanks, Armd! I think the horses are VERY used to having people around. There are signs posted that say not to approach within 50' of them, and I think this is wise. These are still wild animals and you never know how they'll respond - especially during mating season (which is when I captured these images).

As for the Z9, there's definitely a learning curve. I came from the D850, and I was hoping for a bit better noise profile, but unfortunately that hasn't been the case. I guess I shouldn't be surprised because they both have the same pixel density. Where the Z9 shines is in the AF tracking. Still learning the true capabilities of this camera, but so far it's very promising.

Great looking set! You had great timing with the sunlight.

I had no idea the Outer Banks had wild mustangs. Maybe they like the sea breeze to keep the biting flies away.

There were plenty of biting flies out there! Got bit several times while capturing these images, but it was well worth it.

I've been told that when the weather is warm enough, the horses will walk out into the surf to cool off.
