Here you have a very sophisticated motor, with advanced technology (for the day) in metals, and now you have a wooden prop, which almost looks decorative. Is there a reason you would want a wooden prop when clearly the tech must be there for a metal prop? Weight?
Thank you! There were many reasons for wood propellers. A few of the reasons are listed below:
- The lighter weight of wood was important in the early days of flight, as the engines produced relatively low horsepower and the lighter weight allowed for better performance.
- Wood better resisted damage due to vibration compared with metals of the day.
- Wood was readily available and many craftsman had experience with woodworking. Especially important during wartime production.
