I met Trinity for a portrait session, but since she is an aspiring young model (16 yo.), it easily became more than portraits. C&C is always greatly appreciated. Derek

Over all a nice set. 12 images is a lot to give a c&c on every image. My suggestions would be the following. #5 is okay but is generally not a pose to include for young ladies. #10 looks a little soft on the focus, not a bad image but not tack sharp on the eyes like some of the others. Finally, to me #12 should be removed. It doesn't really add to the set and seems out of place.

I agree with Ron on the last shot, but not #5 which says "spunky kid" to me. Nice work, I would think she is quite happy with the results.

I really like all Derek but 1,2 and 3 especially.

Third one is very nice and the best to my eyes.

If I may suggest: a little less contrast on the others and since a lot are really head or head and shoulders portraits I would have favoured a longer focal length. Maybe 135mm.

Thank you very much for the feedback Ron. Out of curiosity, what about #5 makes it not a pose for young ladies?

Thank you so much Jim, she is very happy. I was surprised after providing color and b&w images that she posted only b&w images on her Instagram.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I believe that pulling back the contrast on a few of the images would be beneficial. And I understand that my use of shorter focal lengths for portraits is not to everyone’s taste, but it is my preference in most instances for my personal work. If I had been able to bring my Leica on this shoot, several portraits would have been made at a 28mm focal length

As I said generally. That is more of a power pose and most of the posing guides will say to not pose a woman square to the camera like that. To me it's not the strongest of the set of images that you provided.

I shy away from talking about "the rules" because as people have told me for years, "know the rules and then break the rules."

If there was a reason you both wanted that image in your set, then go with it no matter what anyone else says or thinks.

I think the superwoman pose works great and shows the strength of this woman. And a few words from some of the greatest to ever click shutter about rules.

It's short and really worth a watch.

And some words by some of the greats.

"When subject matter is forced to fit into preconceived patterns, there can be no freshness of vision. Following rules of composition can only lead to a tedious repetition of pictorial cliches." - Edward Weston

"There are no rules and regulations for perfect composition. If there were we would be able to put all the information into a computer and would come out with a masterpiece. We know that's impossible. You have to compose by the seat of your pants." - Arnold Newman

"There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs." - Ansel Adams

"And in not learning the rules, I was free. I always say, you're either defined by the medium or you redefine the medium in terms of your needs." - Duane Michals

"There are no shortcuts, no rules." - Paul Strand

"Photography is not a sport. It has no rules. Everything must be dared and tried!" - Bill Brandt

"I came from the outside, the rules of photography didn't interest me... "-William Klein

"...... a photograph can look any way. Or, there's no way a photograph has to look (beyond being an illusion of a literal description). Or, there are no external or abstract or preconceived rules of design that can apply to still photographs. "-Garry Winogrand

and maybe my favorite " ......so called “composition” becomes a personal thing, to be developed along with technique, as a personal way of seeing." - Edward Weston

Understand the tenets of compositional elements ... then, do whatever you want to make it be what you want it to be. You pic, your message, your call.

He may have learned and understood the notes and chords, but Jimi also knew how to bend things his way. It's not just a matter of breaking the rules, for the sole purpose of breaking the rules ... but knowing what it is that you are trying to achieve in the process. Rules are just shortcuts that may precede / preempt understanding. For those who have not yet developed their understanding to a level which they have command and control of the elements, rules are some manner of formulaic "cheat sheet".

Just gotta progress beyond the cheat sheet ... you know, to a level that you can play it your way without having to read the sheet music for every note.

I agree with Paul Strand
"There are no shortcuts, no rules." - Paul Strand

The key is how do you make it yours. Take it all in, mix it up and make it come out yours.

Jimi took in Buddy Guy, Howl'in Wolf, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and somehow made it all his own. He wasn't a rule follower but a leader.

Derek, nice set that works well in B&W. I'd like to see a bit more fabric in the black shorts in shots 6 and 7 like you did in 5 and 8. I'd just be a bit careful, as has been said, not to over sexualize the models when working with young girls.

Thanks John very much for commenting, the b&w is my and Trinity’s preference. I don’t think I understand what you mean about the fabric in the black shorts. And if anyone wrote anything about over sexualizing young girls, it went over my head—I hope that I didn’t miss something.

I might try some strobes or bounce for catch lights and pleasing contrast ratios if shooting a modeling portfolio. Personally, I might upload smaller pics so one could look at more of them together with a portfolio vibe to get a bette sense of the b/w aesthetic.

Thank you very much John for the input. This shoot was for my personal portrait project, but went further because she loves modeling. We do plan a portfolio shoot in the future where I certainly will follow your advice and use softer light and pp.

#3 is a great headshot portrait. #10 is my favorite shot. I don't care for razor sharp focus accuracy. I go with my gut.

Thank you so much for commenting. The barn door is perfectly focused in #12, and on #4 you need to look up, not down.
