C'mon guys, where are the pictures?

Well you certainly are not posting any, are you?

Here is the simple answer for you: Very few people have received the camera, let alone had the time or opportunity to get used to it and to post quality images. And do you think many or any are having one delivered on a Saturday or Sunday?

Amazon delivers on Saturday and Sunday. 😁

This seems to be a lot more obvious on the R7. I've shot several hundred thousand photos with the R5 and haven't noticed it before, at least not to this extent.

R5's are pretty bad. I have two R5's and I shoot with my friends R5's when mine are being used for video and they all have the same behavior. The warped images must be from the IS motor. If the R7 is worse, I'm sure it will still be able to capture a good frame in between the distorted frames.

Indiana has had its first Limpkin show up in the past couple of weeks. This species has been showing up in many states throughout the country with many first state records over the past few years. I had my R3, R5, and R7 with me on my kayak this morning to try out. I used the R3 first as its my most trusted camera and I didn't want to miss a documentation shot if I had to get one. I spent 6 hours on kayak last week and couldn't find it, but I found it 17 minutes after being on the boat this morning. Here are a couple of photos from the R7. Both images are shot with the bare RF600 f4. They have gone through Lightroom for routine tweaks, then Topaz Denoise, then I sharpened a tad in Lightroom. Clearly the pixel level image quality is not as good as the R5 which in turn is not as good as the R3, but I got a whole lot more pixels on the bird and I think the quality is acceptable.

I have and do occasionally use Topaz DeNoise but my personal preference for NR with sharpening is Topaz AI Clear.

You have to a Prime member. As of 5th Jan 2022 there are 149 million Prime members in USA. If it’s in stock, you can order on a Saturday afternoon and it will be delivered the next day, and shipping is free! 😁

Hmmm, I'd like to hear a bit more. What do you mean the the pixel level quality isn't as good? Again, one wouldn't expect the same DR, color responsiveness, SNR, etc. from the R7 as the 32 MP CMOS sensor has a pixel pitch of around 3.2 microns vs. 4.4 microns for the R5 and 6 microns for the R3. FWIW, I can tell the difference in IQ between images made with my 5dmkIV (5.4 microns) and R5 though I would never return to the former camera. The R3 (as do other cameras) benefit from the BIS. The Olympus E-M1 Mark III, perhaps one of the best 4/3'rds camera has a pp of around 3.4 microns, so I expect the IQ of the R7 to be very similar to the Oly.

The second image looks fantastic in terms of detail and if I am not mistaken you still were fairly far away if this was a cropped image from a 600 mm, no? I think the jury is still out on the R7.

Exactly what you're saying. The image quality of my ISO 800-1600 R7 images, when viewed at 100%, don't look as good as the R3 when viewing at 100%.

I would estimate I was 50 feet from the bird in the second picture, but it could have been +/- 20 feet or so.

So far I'm quite enjoying the camera. There will be times I use it over the other bodies--likely in situations when there is quite good light and I am photographing birds that aren't flying rapidly. Shorebirds on the beach, gulls, etc.

One wouldn’t expect the per pixel IQ to be the same. I recall when I first purchased the a7riv with a whopping 61 MP at a pp of 3.76 microns. The magnified images appeared terrible with high sensor noise though one could one crop like crazy and the images cleaned up beautifully in NR software. It’s too bad the camera’s af was subpar and the sensor speed was too slow. Again, time will tell whether the R7 is a swing and a miss or a home run.

Right. That's why I compared the R7 to the R5 and then to the R3--smaller pixels generally don't look as good as larger pixels when viewed at 100%.

You can’t compare the different cameras at 100%, you have digitally zoomed each file differently. Try resampling two of the three to the lowest resolution of the three.

Actually, try resampling them to the HIGHEST of the three.

A brief spell with some swallows today. Some samples below.

Bear in mind one needs to spend days getting great keepers and it all starts with acquisition, tracking and getting some images in focus and the R7 does a great job of doing that - so keepers will come.

Eye AF works well and picked up the swallows eyes frequently while in flight and picks up bigger birds and small ducks in the water quite a long way off. Tracks birds in flight very well all over the frame no problem - I might have to agree with the Fro re performance vs Z9 - acquisition feels much better.

EVF is super nice with electronic shutter and easy to track swallows but blackout and initial lag is not great with mechanical shutter. Rolling shutter is a killer with swallows so most images are with mechanical shutter - pretty much every swallow in flight image is warped with electronic shutter.

https://duncangroenewald.com/img/tests/R7-100-400/2022-06-27/DG7_20220627_1_2700.jpg

Anyway with some work it is possible to get some good shots using mechanical shutter - which scared the heck out of the swallows in the beginning - they got used to it after a while. I shoot close up - 3 meters or less.

Acquisition fails completely against a busy background - if there is enough background separation then pre-focussing helps - but forget it if they are close to the background. Sony is much better at picking up moving things in the same position.

Detail is retained pretty well even at 1/4000s but cropping is just not really possible as the images fall apart (like most aps-c images) - so not much flexibility in post.

Highlight recovery is not great and no zebras for stills makes it more difficult to nail exposure. Try lowering the highlights on the Cormorant - maybe it is just DPP - but they seemed clipped to me. Histogram is useless since it does not tell you what part of the image is blown out.

BTW video animal AF works pretty well and you can see the tracking box as it hangs on to the swallows - unfortunately you really need 240fps for swallows - everything is very choppy at 120fps. But it should be great for slower birds.

I think most will be pretty pleased with the performance - definitely considering replacing the a6400/70-350 - just have to convince myself the extra bulk is worth it.

Ergonomics is really very nice - except for Zebras and one missing dial it could be better than my A1. 100-400 lens seems is nice and sharp.

Canon please do a stacked sensor aps-c and an aps-c 100-400 f/6.3 or even copy the Sony 70-350 f/6.3.

Best review and photos so far! I can’t wait to see Canon put out a 32MP APS-C camera with a stacked BSI sensor.

Got mine Saturday from B&H but the weather's been crap. Stopped on the way home from work this morning and grabbed a few images, nothing special. Tons of clouds blocked most of the sun but made for decent silhouettes. First attempt at macro with a cheap 50mm IS STM, extension tubes, and a speedlight. Will go again tomorrow morning and hopefully be able to find some birds in good light to check feather detail....

"Anyone shooting mostly BIF should only look at the R3, Z9 or A1. Even the A9 II is not as good as the A1. The R7 at about 1/4 of the price of these cameras surely cannot be expected to perform at the same level. I would be happy if the R7 AF is “only” as good as the R5/R6."

Personally I think the R5/6 are pretty terrific for BIF. And people have issues with the Z9 for BIF even after really getting to know the camera's systems. Nothing is perfect...the A1 probably comes closest right now overall.

Appreciate if you could you share your AF mode/zone for these tree swallow shots.
