Just watched Jared Polin’s preview of the upcoming 400mm f4.5 prime.

While I’m not really interested in that particular focal length/aperture, I am impressed with Nikon’s last couple telephoto offerings.

I really hope Sony has something similar in the works.

Personally, I would be interested in a telephoto prime that would slot in between the Uber expensive supertelephoto primes and the more budget conscious 200-600. Perhaps in the $3000-4000 range. I’m thinking a 500mm f5 or 600mm 5.6.

Anyways, I hope Sony isn’t resting on it’s laurels. Nikon is being really aggressive these days.

Looks great to me! Good size and weight from the look of it!
And I agree with the sentiment. This is very much a segment where Nikon is pulling ahead with their new lineups. Sony is missing out here, and it's a dangerous development given how well received the Z9 was.

Agree with the above. Given the current lineup, I think a small, high quality 500/5.6 would be great at under 3000 USD (thinking 2,599); make it a smallish, high quality 500/4.5 and you could probably go close to 4000 USD; and neither would really infringe on the 400/2.8 or 600/4 (and would compliment the 100-400 nicely).

A great addition to the PF line, although it would be of no interest to me. A 600mm f5.6 PF would get me back to Nikon, and if they would add a Z500mm f5.6PF, they would have the far, far superior lens line to Sony (and also Canon), especially when the Z200-600mm and Z600/4 with built-in TC arrive.

Canon at least is rumored to be working on another véry interesting lens: a RF500mm f4.5DO, but Sony has fallen into a deep sleep for anything over 200mm, and I wonder if they will ever awaken.

You are right, in the super telephoto range Sony hasn’t done anything since the 200-600 G / 600 GM releases 3 years ago but they have been building up in every other lens segment to the point where it’s nearly complete.
That being said emount does need more super telephoto options and personally I’d like to see but fully acknowledge its doubtful all of the below will happen.

Sony
300mm f2.8
400mm f4 or 4.5
800 6.3

Sigma
500mm 5.6
800mm 7.1

Also, and this is because it personally affects me, the gap between the 200-600G and the 600GM is too big, with the latter being literally too big and far too expensive for my liking. Sony should really concentrate on bridging this wide gap, by offering something inbetween, like Nikon is now doing.

It could be a 600mm f5.6 or a 500mm f4.5 with diffractive optics or not, and of course Sony does not háve to do it if they are reluctant, but I see Sony wildlife/birding shooters moving towards Nikon if they do not, except perhaps for the high end shooters that won't have any reason unless they want to add a portable high quality option to the 400/600GM.

I have the A1+200-600, and prefer the A1 over the Z9 by miles, but still I am looking sideways to the Nikon PF lenses. A 7000,- 800PF is so much better regarding price, size and weight than a 600GM+1.4TC, and still has high level prime quality.

What's wrong with the Sony 100-400mm? Is this what Sony is thinking? Light weight, more flexible as has zoom.....

That’s why a Sony 400mm f4.5 wouldn’t be much interest to me personally.

I’d be much more interested in a higher quality 500 or 600mm prime. Without having to step all the way up to the 400f2.8 or 600f4.

While the 200-600 is a wonderful lens. I am seeing the limits of it’s optics on the A1. I definitely think there’s a market for a lens in between it and the top of the line primes.

I think Sony has more blatant holes in the lens lineup namely a 200 f2 or 2.8, a 300 f4 and a 300 2.8. It has the longer end covered by multiple lenses.

Yes Sony lacks 300mm f2.8 and f4 lenses, but they also lack any kind of 500mm lens. I used to shoot a Sigma 500mm lens with or without a 1.4TC.
Bottom line is, Sony lacks multiple lenses above 200mm, and more importantly, seems to lack Nikon's drive to do special things here alltogether. I wonder if they have stopped designing anything over 200mm's...

I think the combination of 100-400 and 200-600 covers most of the layman’s needs and the 400 / 600 covers the professional / advanced amateur needs at these longer lengths.

I would think with AP’s relationship, if AP thought something was missing, Sony would build it.

I know there's debate about this, but wouldn't the 70-200 GM2 and a TC be about the same size (lighter?) and match that focal length?

Maybe, but not the aperture and not the IQ.

Rather than want a 400 4.5, why not a 300 2.8 and use both the 1.4x and 2x to give you more reach. Much more flexible and I doubt you’d see any IQ difference.

The 100-400 is 2/3rds of a stop slower at 400mm and is heavier. I would much rather have this lens. It makes a 560 f/6.3 vs. 560 f/8 with a 1.4X TC and makes an 800 f/9 vs. 800 f/11 with a 2X TC. I would gladly give away the ability to zoom for that faster aperture. Minolta used to have a very nice 400 f/4.5 for its day. I really hope Sony makes a lens something like this or at some point I am likely to switch to Nikon.

Seems a strange one to me…a ‘tweener lens.
Neither a fast prime or flexible zoom, not something I would go for even in FE mount.

I would be happy with a FE 600mm f5.6 prime though.

Minolta had a 400mm f4.5 that was my workhorse birding lens back in the 80's - early 2000's. Screw drive but fairly sharp with film wide open. Once digital took over it was quickly apparent the the purple fringing and sharpness on a higher MP sensor were an issue

Well it does make a 560 f/6.3 with the 1.4X TC, so not that far off at all from a 600 f/5.6, but I would welcome a 600 f/5.6 from Sony as well. Any prime 300mm or longer with a less than slow aperture for the focal length (300 f/4, 400 f/4.5, 500 f/5.6, 600 f/6.3) and less than $5,000 would make me happy, but rather surprisingly Sony has nothing to offer like that. I hope it changes.
