Camera is less than a week old, shot with it twice and I have had the sensor cover function on from the minute I got it. Shot today using a few different lenses, dirt on the sensor. $50 to get it cleaned. This never happened with my Canon cameras and never had a sensor cover. Pathetic.

Maybe the dust entered into the camera via your lenses. How often do you clean the mount on your lenses?

Lenses are brand new as well. Literally the first time I have shot the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and actually now that I am looking thru the photos more carefully, the spot showed up on the last two shots with the Sigma, doesnt seem to be there before. I can get dirt on my sensor from a zoom lens? I am pretty new to zooms, I thought the worst that could happen was some dust getting inside the front element of the lens.

Zoom lenses can pump air (and dust) inside your camera to the exposed sensor as well.

Lovely. Guess I'll be returning the Sigma and sticking with my primes then because getting dirt on my sensor literally using it for the first time is not a good look. Thanks

Glad to help! I’m not a big fan of zooms (I only own one zoom) for a few reasons…one of them is that they can be a dust pump.

BTW your sensor cover is NOT meant to keep dust out. That one is on you

Whats it meant for then? Im pretty sure its to protect your sensor from dust while changing lenses, hence the reason its located under Anti-dust function

Directly from Sony themselves....

"If dust or debris gets inside the camera and adheres to the surface of the image sensor, clean the image sensor using [Sensor Cleaning]. You can also set whether or not to close the shutter when you turn off the camera so that dust or debris is prevented from adhering to the image sensor."

Yes no and maybe it’s really there for grease and oil not to mention your grubby greasy fingers. They do have a built in dust shaker but it’s also meant to protect circuits when you wet clean.Dust will go anywhere no matter what they tell you. They will never mention it’s really there so you can wet clean with solution and sensor swabs. Trust me we are all morons in Sonys eyes but it’s also there to protect you from screwing up. There not going to say that. I’ve cleaned at least a 1000 wet cleaned sensors.

Seriously cover glass is to protect the the sensors it’s not there for dust. Nothing will stop dust Period. There shutter close helps it but big hole gets dust

If your lens is dirty you will get dust on the sensor. The dust shield only works when the camera is off. When the camera is on the sensor is exposed. That is how WYSIWYG works.

You need to develop properly maintenence and use procedures. That includes learning how to dry and wet clean your sensors and lenses.

Since the advent of the sensor protection shutters I need to clean my sensors one or two times a year. That is a major improvement.

Stop blaming the equipment and learn to use it properly.

Been a professional photographer for 17 years and never touched a single sensor. I prefer to leave the inner workings of my $2500 camera to professionals, the same way I don’t go messing around with my car engine. However, I did just order a cleaning kit. I suppose blowing some air in there and using the supplied brush can’t do much damage. But anything beyond that and I’m taking it in.

I've shot Canon, Nikon and Sony and they all get dust on the sensor. It's inevitable... And as someone who spends a lot of time at f/11, it's visible too. Takes about a minute to clean up in post.

Dust can occur at any time. I would think you’d want to ensure the sensor is clean before going for a shoot.

Most folks will use a bulb blower . I use canned air but I don’t recommend it unless you really know how to do it without shooting propellant In there. For wet clean . FF sensor swap with Eclipse solution. Go in one direction. It’s not hard but you have to be careful. I’ve done it at least a 1000 times teaching workshops I cleaned everyone’s sensor daily. Most with Medium format backs which get really dirty. This new shutter close on removing a lens does help but again big hole there so dust will happen . Sonys wording on this is really a liability issue on there part. So it’s vague

I’ve never had an issue with dirt on my sensor in 17 years, not once. But I’ve mostly shot Canon and prime lenses. Most the time with a 50 or 85 that rarely left my camera. Had a Tamron 28-75 for my old a73 but only used it a few times and then this Sigma gets dirt in my sensor on the first use. Looking into it, seems dust with this 24-70 2.8 is a known issue. Already returned it and I’ll be sticking with my primes. Thanks

You would likely have had dust on your sensor with Canon, but if you're shooting fast primes, wide open or close to it, you're very unlikely to see it. Typically, f/8 or smaller. I shot everything from an ancient 10D to a Rebel to a 5D to a 1DsII...all got dust on the sensor, routinely.

Maybe it was visible dust in the lens you were seeing? The 24-70 Art did have an issue with that.

Since this is the only complaint I have seen about this, my guess is that your experience is a one-off due to unknown events or circumstances and that you won't have the problem again. Otherwise, this forum and others would be filled with complaints. And they are not.

I think it would help me if I could remember to turn off the camera first.
