Highwood Pass opens Jun 15 each year. Its the highest paved highway in Canada at near 2200metres. They close it over the winter to help the bighorn overwinter and save money on maintenance.

As I came home the radio was saying closed for snow. Avalanche risk. I decided to go anyway because I found two grizzly the weekend before short of the closure and wanted to see the snow impact. We have had lots of rain (and snow high up).

Anyway, contrary to the radio report. the door was open and so I went through the gate. My Sunday bears were no where to be found and it was quite snowy all the way to the peak from the North. But as I came down from Highwood pass on the south, the snow was gone and ..... a family of 4 was munching on dandelions. And I had most of the pass to myself because everyone else listened to the radio.

I love this time of year.

P.S. Shooting 12fps R5 with eye focus with 200-400 with flip in 1.4x and feature to apsc crop as needed and good dynamic range --- I pulled my 5dsr out for a few moments on my 600/1.4x and got 3 pictures before the buffer slowed (and my arms got tired of the weight) reinforcing the goodness of the R5 --- is so great. It reinforced that I don't think there is a better combination - zoom from 200-560 f4 when they get close - f5.6 and higher iso when they move away, 12fps, infinite buffer, eye focus. Its the perfect bear camera / lens combination.

Excellent set of bear images! I like them all.
When I was a Canon shooter the 200-400 was my favorite lens. Perfect for bears.

dclark: It has been a long winter with the bears sleeping. I am just reminded by the bear family how good the 200-400 is when the bears move in and out from my car. Glad you like them all.
