p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · RF Astrophotography

Hey all, I just picked up an R6 and thinking about changings systems (again). I used to shoot Canon on the EF mount and when I was doing astrophotography used the much revered Rokinon 24mm 1.4. As I'm looking at what's available as a wide-angle lens that could double duty there aren't many options native to the RF mount.

Canons 16mm 2.8 has gotten some really poor reviews as far as image quality is concerned. The Rokinon 14mm 2.8 (AF version) also has meh reviews. Not sure if I should adapt an EF lens or anyone has any suggestions for a native option.

Thanks!

I have a Rokinon 14mm 2
8 in the EF mount. Ut I think it's the manual focus one. I do t have it with me to check. It gets really good reviews as a low cost wide angle ASTRO lens, and I have been happy for the limited ASTRO stuff I do. Ef to Rf adapter is seemless, so don't worry about adapting.

Some folks like the zeiss MA ual focus le sessions for Canon for ASTRO as well. They will also be EF mount. I'm sure the RF 15-35mm 2.8 could be used as well, if you can afford it.

If I'm going to adapt, going to do the manual focus 24 1.4 again from Rokinon. That was a phenomenal performer.

Unfortunately the RF50/1.2 is about the only Canon option I know if that is truly in the ballpark. I'd adapt one (or more) of the myriad EF options available.

Adapt a Sigma 14mm f 1.8 if you can swing it. I use that on RF and love it for MW. Bob

I have an R6 that I use for astro, and I still only use EF lenses.
For astro there are way better options for EF mount, and adapting causes no loss in performance, so why not?
My favourite lens for astro is still the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8.

Here are 2 very good threads from POTN on Astrophotography. Cameras vary from Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc, and some of the lenses used, are basic consumer glass. A good tripod with tracking is a must for long exposures. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=951094&page=150

The Tamron wide angle 2.8 EF zoom is wonderful. More expensive than the rokinon, but better luck on a copy.
I had to return two Rokinon's before I had a fairly flat field. Once you have your copy, your golden.

Hello All,
I am new to camera's as well as astrophotography and I have recently acquired a Canon EOS 7D Mark II camera and want to start off with this for taking some pics. What lens would be a good starter lens for astrophotography? I have looked a many and everyone keeps mentioning to make sure it is a LS lens with at least a f/2.8 capability, but wanted more input from people who have been shooting for a while.

Sincerely,
Jaime

It has also gotten some excellent reviews.

I think it depends on what your purpose is and how much you value portability. For astro or critical landscape work, I'd avoid it, due to its reliance on digital corrections and the presence of coma in the corners (your point I would assume). As a lightweight lens for travel, reportage, or general use, I think it's rather great.

I am enjoying all of the Canon RF STM primes. I know they won't work for everyone, but I think how we evaluate these lenses deserves a bit of nuance. For my work I'll take the extra stop or more of light on the sensor vs. absolute sharpness in the corners wide open, in the same size or smaller package. (Sorry for being OT.)

The holy grail astro lens is the Sigma 14mm Art, but its pricey. If you can afford it though, that's where I'd start. If not, a budget alternative is the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm F/2.8. Its far from perfect, but if you stop down to f/3.5 or so the corners clean up OK. Should do better on your 7DII since it is APSc and crops the corners for you.

You might also see if you can find some reviews on the 17-55 f/2.8 EF-s from Canon. I've not paid much attention to that lens since I don't shoot APSc except for EF-m. But it could be a good lens for you for general photography as well.

a very good review and more feedback about some astro-friendly lenses
https://dustinabbott.net/2017/11/sigma-14mm-f-1-8-dg-hsm-art-review/

The rokinon 14mm f2.8 (non -af) is actually pretty good, but has a large mustache distortion, that can be slightly corrected ( there is a profile for it)
Unfortunately the Zeiss 15mm shows some coma distortions too

I love the Sigma 14-24. I've adapted it and put it on the R5. It's fantastic.

I use the Rokinon SP 14mm f/2.4. Better build quality and a little faster than the usual f/2.8 version and a lot lighter and cheaper than the Sigma. Image quality is at least as good.

It doesn't bother me to use Canon's adapter with EF lenses on the R5. Works flawlessly.

This. The EF mount 14mm f/1.8 sigma art is the best UWA astro lens I’ve found. It’s pretty much perfect optically once you stop down to f/2.2.

Brian,

Thank you for the information. I will look into that and do a little more research. I would love to meet up with people in the San Antonio Texas area to talk more about astrophotography and all the ins and outs, if there is anyone available. Again, thank you.

Hope to hear from you soon Brian.

I believe Rokinon offers RF mounts on several of their lenses. I know they have an AF 14mm f/2.8 that they sell in an RF variant. It does not have the same optical formula as the SP lens, but neither does it have the same optical formula as their standard 14mm manual lens. If I recall correctly, it is much closer to the SP in terms of astro performance, in that you still get a good lack of coma but also get the benefit of not having the weird moustache distortion. The fact that you can get it in an RF mount is just a nice little bonus if that's what you're after.

Was looking for an RF solution for astrophotography as well. By no means a master at shooting the starry night but like to dabble when I'm on the coast, away from the city lights.

Currently using the EF 20mm with adapter on the R6 but wouldn't mind finding a native RF lens but it doesn't look like Canon has gotten around to it yet. And wouldn't it be nice to have the focus distance window back on lenses?

Sadly, I think the focus distance windows are a thing of the past. A lot of astro guys like MF lenses for the reason they have a reliable infinity stop (at least some of them do).

I am still waiting for a review of the RF 24mm for astro. A preliminary one seemed to imply it was only OK wide open. But for the price it may still be worth it if its decent at 2.8.
