p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hawthorn Shield-bug

I was examining some Goldenrod (yet to flower) plants for possible insect subjects when I saw this individual staring at me. I checked that my wife, nearby, was sitting down, keeping our cat company while I rushed back to the house to fetch my camera. What could possibly go wrong?

When I returned, my wife was where I had been when I saw the bug but with her back to it. At first I thought she had caused it to move away but it was still where I found it.

I took quite a few shots. The problem was that this bug kept changing position, to always face me, wherever I placed myself. Eventually, I managed to get some of the angles I wanted.

Stereos will be uploaded separately.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/200 to 1/400 at f11 ISO 2000, bright cloudy, hand-held.

Beautiful Harold. I am amazed at the beauty in macro photography of bugs.

Thanks, Dave.

It's not just the bugs. Fungi and Slime moulds can be very colourful.

Thanks, Birdie.

Like you, I find the garden a rich source of subjects.

Thanks, Brian.

I have been trying some higher ISO daylight exposures.

For those who insist that a tripod is essential for macro, this is a good example of where that would have been impossible. It was on one of a stand of hundreds of crowded stems, about 20cm from its edge and I had to do quite a bit of leaning over and twisting to get shots and I had to frequently walk backwards and forwards, covering 180 degrees, as the bug change the way it faced.
