On the few occasions when I have seen Owlflies I haven't got a decent shot at all.

I don't think I have come across "diopter reversed" before.

I started macro photography after reading John Shaw's book Closeups in Nature. Since I was a newbie, he used the 6T reversed so I did the same. Haven't looked back.

John Shaw was a brilliant photographer. His closeups in nature was my 'bible 'in the eighties and nineties.
I have to say that I do regret using his favourite film Kodachrome 25. A pain to print on Cibachrome and now a pain to scan well.
Your image is certainly a good tribute to him.

Well with focus stacking I usually shoot at f/5.6 to obtain good bokeh behind subject. I like clear backgrounds. This cooperative subject was moved to a shaded area and shot very close. I wanted detail in the eyes and I chose f/16 to stack at close range.
