p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Burrowing Owls (Z9 and 400mm fl)

I had a few minutes yesterday afternoon before my son’s baseball practice so I stopped by to snap a few photos of the burrowing owls. I finally got some pics of them on something other than the ground or their wooden perches. I was completely surprised when one of the flew up in to a nearby oak tree and I was able to snag a few good photos. CC welcomed and appreciated. Thanks for looking.
Taken with a Nikon z9 and a 400mm f2.8 fl lens.

Super images Eric. You handled those bright backgrounds very well and the bokeh in the first few is very pleasing

These are really nice Eric. Great light and they seem to be out and about early in the day. You sure get nice and close with the 400 2.8 and get great detail in your shots.

The female has the dark banding in it's irises, which shows almost black in some shots. #1 is the adult female of the main burrow. the other burrow failed. I know the caretakers of that burrow very well and I received that intel from them. That female would usually guard the burrow while the male hunted and returned with food for the owlets. The female would catch local food close but never left the area completely much during the day.

Ah….. these are actually different owls than the ones where you took photos. All of these shots were from Pelican Baseball fields. The owl in the first photo always has a solid black left eye. It is really crazy. I have never seen one with 2 completely different looking eyes.

Oh Ok, my bad. I did get info on that banded one over there. It's a male which was banded in 2016 or earlier.

Excellent!
I can't wait to get back to FL to photograph perhaps my favorite Owl! Was only able to do so in January 2020 before the pandemic hit when I visted the in-laws in Hollywood, and recovering from a knee replacement. Went to Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City. But would like to try on the west coast this time as well.

Eric...I was following your posts on the Sports photography form and found that you are a nature photographer as well. The phrase " I had a few minutes before my son's baseball practice" followed by these stunning photographs cracked me up. I'll keep working on it.
