Lovely work Gary !!! Such fun to find the tiny things in the garden. Those flies in the first 3 are even smaller than the hovers . Nice work on them and you did get very nice detail on the second and third one , which is super tiny.
No expert , but what works for me to get more detail , is to get as close as I can . If you can get to the MFD of your macro lens, that is great. Another help is extension tube(s) and /or teleconverter.
This is what I do to try and get close without scaring the critter away. Look for when they are feeding , as you have done on the hover flies. I try to get on their level, not over them. I start by getting a bit away, put the camera to my eye and slowly move closer. Ideally , I like to sit on the ground , and slowly lean forward to get closer. I use my elbows on my knees to steady the camera . No sudden movements and try not to cast shadow over them. Most of the time , I also remove my lens hood so they are not having something coming so close and straight at them. Call me crazy, but I also talk softly to them and always thank them for spending sometime with me
Really nice work Gary.

First off, I would most certainly place you in the "expert class". So let's get that out of the way I've mentioned this before, your garden work is what inspires me to constantly search for color and composition and also strengthening my technique, but like I said, it's a work in progress. Thank you so much for sharing some of your craftwork. I really appreciate that !
And as for your last line, yeah, it sounds like you probably are a little crazy
Stay tuned.
