p.4 #18 · p.4 #18 · Megadap ETZ21 just announced: will it be a game changer? | |
I agree it is quite a gamble to count on either great AF performance or IQ portability. For my work the latter matters most. So, I always rent before buying an adapted lens whether or not it’s AF.
Combinations of lens-adapter-body (plus firmware versions of each) are specific to the set, and vary greatly. The firmware part is often key. Reviews of particular combinations are highly valuable, but absent FW version being shared can become misleading as new versions are issued.
I will issue a report of the particular combo I’m testing once it’s ready (z7 + FE 35/1.4 GM). My biggest concern is will the lens retain great contrast and color, and nice falloff? Secondarily, will it hunt like mad, or just be a bit less certain? When it achieves focus, does it nail it? Are the combo’s electronics and controls reliable and predictable, or does it inexplicably brick from time to time? Even if all works well enough, I will likely sell it in favor of a Z 35mm f1.4 S the day Nikon makes a great one available to us. Native is better, but available beats unavailable.

As a long time E-mount user who started out adapting various lenses, I can tell you that it's best to curb expectations when adapting non-native lenses to a system. It works fine for manual focus, but leaves a lot to be desired for AF. I currently adapt a 70-200 f/4 Canon to my a7rIII, but it's mainly for landscape use so I don't mind the mediocre performance for AF.
I would only recommend an adapter like this to people who are looking at picking up some of the excellent manual focus glass available to e-mount. I'm referring mostly to voigtlander and loxia lenses, which are both excellent lines if rendering is a priority. The construction and zoom throw is also nice if you are into manual focus experience for still life, landscape etc. I feel like the Nikon AF lineup is pretty solid and it wouldn't be worth the loss of performance for more demanding AF situations trying to use the Sony lenses. ...Show more →
