This might be a game changer for me because it provides a nice range of reportedly class leading primes from 14mm to 135mm not yet comparatively available from Nikon. The big questions come down to render and if the most stellar Sony mount lenses retain their frame wide acutance when adapted.

I’m currently shooting a second system (L-mount) specifically as a high-end prime gap filler and maybe this adapter immediately lets me to shoot only with Nikon Z bodies. Going to buy it , rent some FE glass and see if I can justify selling off my Leica SL lenses and Panasonic S1R in favor of adapting the Sony 24/1.4 and 135/1.8, plus getting the Z 50/1.2.

I’ve been eyeing that one as well. Excellent reviews. The Z 20/1.8 is also highly praised. I haven’t tried one yet, but it is really the only Z f1.8 I’d consider. Have you shot the Z 20mm, and if so how does the Sony compare?

20/1.8 is great for Astro too. Super light in the bag and very versatile.

Unfortunately no experience with the Z version yet.

I just binge-watched and read dozens of online Sony lens reviews and came to the conclusion there is one lens of interest to me. The FE 35mm f1.4 GM. It seems like a masterful flat field design balancing an artful render with blistering sharpness across the frame. I expect it to compete with the Leica SL 35mm Summicron. Ordered the megadap and will rent the Sony lens to compare.

If I needed a 24mm, the f1.4 GM also looks stellar. If I needed a 135mm, the GM is a special lens too, but I’d go for the Canon 135mm TSE Macro over that one.

Nikon needs to issue some next level primes beyond their f1.8 series.

The Sony 35mm 1.4 GM is a World class lens and my personal favorite prime in the Sony line. It is easily the equal or better than any lens in my Leica M collection

Good to know!

I’m shooting Leica SL, not M though. Similar claims are made for the SL 35mm. It is indeed rather excellent and I love its render - pretty magical wide open. It is perhaps the closest to an optically perfect design from among the lenses I’ve owned and rented. And it is the keystone reason I shoot L-mount as a second system. Which is an inconvenient luxury. If the Sony 35mm when adapted to Nikon Z is indeed better, then I can drop the L-mount kit.

I wish someone would issue a new 500/4. That's worth a couple of cameras at least from any brand.

I shot with a second generation Canon 500/4 for many years. Was my favorite wildlife lens. Worked great for birds with 1.4x TC. But I think 600/4 have become light enough to be the new 500/4 regarding portability and maneuvering, and TC’s have become so good that 400/2.8 easily provide the service of a 500/4. So, I think 500/4 is extinct.

Too bad in Australia where the price of the 500 f/4L II was $10K, the 600 f/4L II was $12K and 600 f/4L III was $16K and now the RF 600 f/4L is > $20K. Canon can kiss my arse if they think the RF is worth any premium over the identical mk III. In no way is the 500 dead now we have 45MP FF cameras and amazing upscaling software. I could buy a 500 f/4 E Nikon and 800 PF for less than the new 400 f/2.8 Z.

Maybe in America 600 makes sense as prices are sensible compared to 500, not in a lot of other countries. However, the new 600 Z with built-in TC (which I'm assuming) will be $15K US so in Australia we are looking at a wallet destroying $24K or even more at some shops as that's what some are asking for the 400. To save 200g is not worth $14-17K AUD IMO. I'd rather a Z9 + 100-400 + 500 f/4 and change to just lens with no camera.

Good point. Hopefully Nikon will issue a Z 500/4.5 one day for about $9000 US. One can dream… But back to the purpose of this thread. I don’t see any long fast glass offered by Sony that Nikon isn’t already making better or will do so soon. Haven’t researched Sigma or Tamron for FE mount - have you? Might be a gem or two there with better pricing.

And you are right about Canon. Their mirrorless long lens offerings are really poor value propositions. Just seem to be rehashes of old functions at higher pricing, and when they get creative it falls flat - an f11 lens is almost sad.

I wouldn't go as far as saying 500 f4 is extinct.

1st point, 400FL on the left 500FL on the right, no TC on a 400 is going to touch the flatline of the 500 wide open. Obviously that is just theoretical performance.

2nd point, if the weight ratio of a new 500 f4 compared to a new 400/600 stays the same as the previous generation, it becomes even more attractive for certain shooters.

Last thought, and this is just personal observation/opinion after shooting various focal lengths over the years. 500mm and 45mp forms some sort of perfect combo for resolving detail. I don't really know if there is any sort of technical reason to back this juju, but my raw files out of camera shot at 500 vs 300/400/600/800 all have slightly more bite and take less work overall in post.

The sony is crazy sharp in the center and has lower coma, so to me, it represents a better deal for Astro, if the adapter works.

As a long time E-mount user who started out adapting various lenses, I can tell you that it's best to curb expectations when adapting non-native lenses to a system. It works fine for manual focus, but leaves a lot to be desired for AF. I currently adapt a 70-200 f/4 Canon to my a7rIII, but it's mainly for landscape use so I don't mind the mediocre performance for AF.

I would only recommend an adapter like this to people who are looking at picking up some of the excellent manual focus glass available to e-mount. I'm referring mostly to voigtlander and loxia lenses, which are both excellent lines if rendering is a priority. The construction and zoom throw is also nice if you are into manual focus experience for still life, landscape etc. I feel like the Nikon AF lineup is pretty solid and it wouldn't be worth the loss of performance for more demanding AF situations trying to use the Sony lenses.

I agree it is quite a gamble to count on either great AF performance or IQ portability. For my work the latter matters most. So, I always rent before buying an adapted lens whether or not it’s AF.

Combinations of lens-adapter-body (plus firmware versions of each) are specific to the set, and vary greatly. The firmware part is often key. Reviews of particular combinations are highly valuable, but absent FW version being shared can become misleading as new versions are issued.

I will issue a report of the particular combo I’m testing once it’s ready (z7 + FE 35/1.4 GM). My biggest concern is will the lens retain great contrast and color, and nice falloff? Secondarily, will it hunt like mad, or just be a bit less certain? When it achieves focus, does it nail it? Are the combo’s electronics and controls reliable and predictable, or does it inexplicably brick from time to time? Even if all works well enough, I will likely sell it in favor of a Z 35mm f1.4 S the day Nikon makes a great one available to us. Native is better, but available beats unavailable.

New to the thread but I am a dual Sony/Nikon users who entered the Nikon world only this past February with when my Z9 arrived. I find the adapter interesting since its only $249 from what I can tell.

Jumping into Nikon has taken a little time trying to find suitable Z lenses due to supply issues. The 100-400 took almost 4 month to arrive after I ordered it. That said I think the Z / S mount zooms for f/2.8 are stellar and compare well to Sony FE GM lenses. Some difference but overall its hard to fault Nikon except for the size and weight of their Z 70-200/2.8 VR S compared to both Sony and Canon. The Z 14-29/2.8 S, Z 24-70/2.8 S, Z 24-120/4 Z and Z 100-400/4.5-5.6 VR are all great. Maybe you could save some money but if you wanted to do that then just stay in one system. I also not sure how I feel about an adapter for longer, heavier lenses and the stress they could put on it.

Primes appear to be different even though the Nikkor Z f/1.8 offer excellent image 1uality as well. There are some that Sony has that out shine those IMHO. These are the 14/1.8 GM, 35/1.4 GM, 50/1.2 GM and 135/1.8 GM from what I can tell owning all of these. The other 20/1.8, 24/1.4, and 85/1.4 G/GM are also very, very good.
So I will buy one of the adapters to try it out. I also have a Friger EF to Z adapter I use with some older Canon EF glass like the excellent EF 35/1.4L II on occasion but If I can adapt Sony I might stop using them. Also I am really not worried bought mount stress since they are smaller and lighter. At least that is my take away.

I admit I also have no desire to add older F mount glass and FTZ II adapter since I really don't own any now and don't want to invest in any but that is a personal decision. (All my F mount glass is AI-S based and from my Film bodies).

You haven't use or even see how it work and already make assumption. Your R3 is slow as heck even with native FE lenses. This adapter can drives 600GM with 2x TC at the same performance as FTZ adapting F lens on Z9. Check YouTube sample man. 😂😂
