p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Megadap ETZ21 just announced: will it be a game changer?

Megadap has just announced the launch of the 2nd generation of its automatic Adapter ETZ for the full line-ups of Nikon Z cameras (both Full frame and APS-C) to use with Sony E mount lenses.
Megadap have upgraded the adapter in terms of both hardware and software; the ETZ21 should simulate almost all the functions offered by the Nikon FTZ adapter, including focus shift function. See links below for more info:

Now, I wonder if - for 90% of Z users - it would be more convenient to invest in Sony and/or third party E-mount lenses.
For example, Sony makes a wonderful 70-200/2.8 OSS II that weighs 1 kg (just), or a 100-400/4.5-5.6 that costs less (including the cost of the ETZ21) than the Z sibling! The 200-600/5.6-6.3 is already available, and quite affordable (with good quality). To not consider how many E-mount lenses are at our disposal.
Finally, E-mount lenses should be easier to resell in the second-hand market, considering Sony market share.
Those photographers who don't need the best combination of in-camera and in-lens image stabilization, or the best focus tracking capability, and/or who like to use a Sony body along with their Z camera, will appreciate the flexibility of an updated adapter with improved compatibility and better built construction (on paper).

Hard to say, depending on how good AF is going to be.
The Techart adapter is decent with some lenses but not so good with some other.

I recently bought Sony 14/1.8 just because it is much smaller and lighter than Sigma counterpart and
I dont think Nikon is going to make anything like this anytime soon. I plan to use it with Z body for astro so I really only need manual focus. With Techart adapter, it is perfectly fine AF wise for landscape

I have Sony 100-400GM which I used quite a lot with A7r iii, A7r iv. It is very sharp but rendering otherwise is not quite as nice as Nikon 100-400. With unknown AF capability via adapter at this time, I would say that get the Nikon if you can swing it (if you only need it for Z body).

Right.
If would be nice if people could share their experience here.

Very impressive AF performance on the Z9 I find.

If you're looking at the Sony 100-400GM and Sony 200-600, you would probably be much better off just adding an A74 as well rather than trying to adapt them to Nikon and hoping for the best.

Nikon already makes a better 100-400 and the 200-600 should be their next lens announcement - I can't imagine a scenario where 90% of Nikon owners would ever prefer adapted Sony lenses over native Z lenses, or third party E-mount lenses. Nice to have options but the people looking to do something like that are going to be few and far between, especially with how good the Z lenses are. With the cost of most lenses relative to a decent camera body, it doesn't take long before it makes more sense to just buy a native body for the lenses you prefer.

Well, if E-mount lenses cost less, or are simply available and not permanently back-ordered, I imagine that Nikon users could seriously think to buy them if the ETZ21 adapter will keep its promises.
Let's consider that several high-quality lenses are available with E-mount only, and with no equivalent Z-mount counterparty (both zooms,e.g., Tamron 35-150/2-2.8, 70-180/2.8 etc., Tamron 11-20/2.8 for APS-C, etc., and primes, e.g. Zeiss Batis & Touit).

Maybe, but 90% of photographers aren't just looking for the cheapest possible lenses (third party), especially on full frame cameras, nor are they looking for niche lenses like the ones listed, even if they are very good. Some my want that, and the adapter may give them that option, but the vast majority are not.

Like I said, it's never bad to have options, but the idea that large numbers of Nikon shooters would choose that path in my opinion is extremely unrealistic. Also, Nikon has several lenses that other manufacturers do not have, including Sony with their more mature lens lineup overall.

The point at which it makes sense to simply buy a body in the mount that you are chasing is so low that it would almost always be the better option. If you have the budget to buy multiple E-mount lenses, especially the really good ones, you can easily afford an A74 or similar and you will get a better experience than you would with a reverse-engineered adapter on another brand.

I consider access to Nikon Z lenses to be one of the primary benefits of the Z system. Sony has some fine lenses, so I don't want to denigrate. That said, I prefer to use Nikon Z lenses unless there's a better alternative in another system, and none of Sony's lenses are compelling to me over Nikon's offerings.

There also aren't really any large gaps in Nikon's lineup anymore.... or at least there won't be once the Z 200-600 is released. The biggest hole I can see is a 135mm portrait prime, but with a Z 85/1.8, a (coming) Z 85/1.2, F 105/1.4, and F 200/2, a missing 135mm lens isn't exactly an issue for Nikon shooters.

With the Z lineup as it stands now, adapting Sony lenses to a Z camera now feels like suffering a bit, for no real gain. If I have to adapt, I'll adapt F lenses instead of E lenses. There's a huge supply of those, and it's not like Nikon's F lenses are any worse than Sony's E lenses.

I suppose the situation is a bit different in the DX lineup. Nikon hasn't fleshed out its compact DX prime lineup yet, so Zfc shooters would probably see the most benefit to this adapter, at least until Nikon, Sigma, and Viltrox fill out the compact AF prime lineup a bit.

No interest at all. I went all in on the Z mount for the Z lenses.

I think you are more likely to see 5% than 90%.

Ok I’ll bite. I am interested. Yes many of the Z lenses are great or even exceptional.
However there are several E mount lenses that are compelling:
Small f/1.4 primes
50/1.2
The tiny tamron and sigma 28-70ish’s
Sigmas new compact 2.8 wide zoom
Sigma I series lenses (especially the 65, which reminds me a bit of the 58/1.4)
28/2
Tamron 35-150 (a lens that Nikon will never make)
16-35/2.8 (better range than Z14-24 and takes reasonable filters )

I would agree that generally with zooms I would lean to the Nikon Z lenses , but there is a wealth of very interesting lenses in Z mount.

It also seems like the new adapter also makes the aperture rings if present on R mount lenses workable which I find very appealing, especially since Z cams have a dial or two fewer than the competition

“90%”

Tell me you don’t have experience adapting lenses without tell me…

For certain applications that don’t require aggressive AF, adapting can work. In most use cases it’s not worth it.

One of the attractions for me of the Z mount is its ability to adapt pretty much any 35mm lens ever made.

With the 400f2.8 TC VRS and 800pf and the upcoming 600f4(possibly with built in TC as well) and all the previous F mount lenses, I don’t see any Sony lens that I want to adapt my Z9 to. If anything, I want to adapt the Nikon Z lenses to the Sony(A1) to see what’s the AF fuss is about. But we all know that ain’t going to happen.

I shoot Z for Z glass. But I’ve heard great things about the Sony E 135mm f/1.8 GM. Any other class-leading lenses from Sony to consider that aren’t on Nikons roadmap yet?

Sigma 35mm f/1.2 maybe 😁

Also the 14mm f/1.8 GM would be awesome for Astro. If I could get the 200-600mm and 600 GM to work that would be awesome.

Well, that 135mm f1.8 was one of the key reasons why I gave up on Sony... the sharpest and most lifeless images I have ever shot...

I ended up not using my a7rIV due to the lack of lenses matching what my Nikon 105mm f1.4 had given me for years.

There are now some very nice Sony lenses, the 50mm f1.2 (although the Z is outstanding also), the 35mm f1.4,... I have a bit of hard time coming up with other examples right now.

Cheers,
Bernard

Exactly.

It's a well established fact that MILCs have greater flexibility than DSLR cameras insofar as adapting lenses is concerned.
It is a fact, not an opinion, that so many high-quality E-mount lenses exist. And they do exist because Sony sells more MILCs than anyone else (at least in USA, Canada & Japan). This implies that there is no reason to limit ourselves to Nikkor Z lenses, in particular if the ETZ21 works like an FTZ.
This would open up new possibilities for us.

I use Canon lenses on my GFX and they work great, and I also use them on the Z9 and they work like native lenses.. One of my favorite on both systems is the Canon EF 16-35 2.8 III.

Its interesting for sure, and an answer for the lack of third party lenses being made for Z mount. There is a new Sony wide angle 2.8 zoom. 16-28 or something like that, that would be about the same price as the 14-30 f4 with the adapter included. This may be one reason Sigma and Tamron have been slow to offer up any Z mount lenses.

That is good to know regarding the Canon lenses. What Canon to Nikon adapter do you use? Thanks.
