Canon has the 32.5MP APS-C R7 available for preorder now. Will Nikon answer? I say yes and hopefully soon.

The Z9 is a great camera but in my opinion a Z9 crop camera (30ish MP) will satisfy a lot of customers and may even move some folks to Nikon with the great lens lineup we have and will have going forward.

Just think what it would be like to have a 30ish MP crop body with Z9 focus attached to the 800 6.3....bring it on!

Your thoughts?

Definitely not. Honestly the Z50 is more like a D3500 or a D5600 body compared to a D500

Well if the wait lists are still months long, those used Z9's will still be selling for retail or more.

Nikon used to do dual launches, like D3 and D300 or D5 and D500. That is what they should have done. By the time Nikon "might" have a mirrorless D500 ready, most if not all the D500 users (including myself) will have migrated elsewhere. I chose the Sony A1, but others have the Z9, and then what use is a Z90 or such?

The ónly reason I can now see for Nikon to release a high performance aps-c mirrorless camera is for it to serve as a smaller and lighter alternative to the Z9, to relieve the Z9 users.
But a Z90 crop camera with the 800PF is not a combo that I would consider over a full frame camera with the 800PF. It would be a bad choice for BIF due to the very small FOV through the viewfinder.

For Sony users that shoot action, APS-C is truly dead. No rumors about an A900 at all anymore, and granted, once you have spent the ridiculous amount that the A1 costs, there is nothing that aps-c would add.

This is a good opportunity for Nikon. The R7 is a disappointment for the Canon folks that wanted a higher-end or pro'ish MILC 7Dii replacement. No vertical grip option? <cough> Z6 & Z7 <cough>

Nikon can differentiate themself by providing a true D500 replacement. I want a HIGH-END APS-C Z90 MILC. A Z70 can be Nikon's R7 camera.

- 36-40MP.
- Grip option.
- 15-20 fps (14-bit lossless/compressed + JPG)
- 25-30 fps (JPG)
- NO mech shutter.
- Z9 controls, buttons, layouts.
- Z9 like build & weather sealing.
- Z9 like AF. Crippled a bit but better than Z6ii & Z7ii.
- Dual CFex slots.

You can charge $2500-3000 after the Z9 back-orders are all filled. Launch a 400/4 or 400/4.5 PF and 600/5.6 PF. Done.

Neither do I, but it depends where you are, at what stage. I am 56 and now have the best years for enjoying wildlife and bird photography. I decided I will not wait for a few more years on uncertain terms for Nikon to bring out a true D500 successor. The years, in good shape and health, are starting to be worth more than money to me. I see too many people around me losing interest in travel and outdoors due to health issues or simply loss of energy or the mental condition for exploring.
Not saying that it all ends soon after 60 at all, but at one stage waiting for future equipment loses all attraction, and it becomes much more important to have something that you can use right now.

Thing is, once you get a body like the A1 (or Z9 for others) you can truly stop waiting for other, better cameras. It has cost me significantly more endlessly "upgrading" or switching systems, than it has cost me to get an A1.
My issue now with a mirrorless D500 would be that at one stage I would still want a full frame action camera. And as said, I don't want a lookout for any other camera any longer.

Apart from that, I wonder if Nikon would sell a lot of them, since many D850/D500 shooters seem to have been succesfully lured into the Z9 trap, and that will progress a lot more this year once the Z9 becomes widely available.

It is probably me but do not understand the obsession on a D500 in a Z body. Just go full frame and call it a day.

It is you. I see a great opportunity for Nikon to come out with a $2000 APS-C that has the missing things the Canon R7 should have had. I would like at the very least a BSI sensor of at least 24MP, an optional vertical grip that holds two batteries, a faster CFexpress card slot and a big fat buffer. I also want IBIS. Would be fantastic with the 100-400 and 500 PF lenses for the kind of shooting I do.

As great as the Z9 is, I am not spending $5500 on a camera body.

It needs to have a stacked sensor and all the performance benefits of it for me to buy one. However, given the crickets coming from Nikon on such a camera, I bet Sony comes out with a 33 ish MP A9III before the mythical Z90 materializes and I straddle two systems. I would guess that such a Z90 camera would work great with the 400 PF if it’s an f/4.

A D500 replacement with specs as outlined above would be fantastic. As would a smaller, lighter Z9 with the same AF but lower fps and video capabilities. If both were available, I would choose the latter and sell my Z7 and D500, although a 30-32mp crop would have the edge over a 45mp FF. Cost and size are two limitations of the Z9 to me.

I will have a fresh one that has never been out of the box for sale if I can get my hands on a "baby" Z9

The D3/D300 and D5/D500 combo was a perfect pair for me. Looking forward to a Z9/Z90(whatever it is called) combo

For me it opens up the possibility for many more frame filling shots of waterfowl and other skittish wildlife. The farther I can be from my subjects the more likely I can capture natural behavior and with flight shots where the bird is more likely to be parallel or at a slight angle facing me. Generally with BIF it has been my experience the closer my subjects are to me the more likely I get a butt shot or a bad angle.

I use to shoot the 800 5.6 lens with 1.25 TC on my D500 and was rewarded with lots of keeper BIF shots.....1500 mm FOV and loved it!
